Liberation Nuts!

Liberation Nuts! We asked revellers at the Secret Garden Party if they had a message for our farmers. As we were at The Secret Garden Party we got some fairly unconventional responses!

Liberation Nuts was Drumming up some more fun at the Thames Festival in London's Southbank.

The Mayor’s Thames Festival is a spectacular, free celebration of London and its river. Taking place over the middle weekend in September between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge, the festival brings Londoners together in the... very heart of the capital to dance, make sculptures, listen to music, watch movies, drink, eat, enjoy performances, sing, play on the beach, sail on the Thames and party in the streets.

If you've got any photos from the Thames Festival, we'd love to see them! You can upload them to our fan photo area.

Liberation Nuts!
Harry Hill, a long term supporter of Fairtrade, has come up with the idea for his own Fairtrade salted peanut product and approached 100% Fairtrade nut company Liberation to manufacture and market the brand. Liberation is supported by Comic Relief and is 42% owned by nut farmers, including growers in Malawi and Nicarag...ua who are supplying the nuts for Harry’s Nuts!.

Harry will make no money from this venture so that as much revenue as possible will go back to the smallholder farmers in Africa and Latin America .

The BAFTA award winning comedian has recently travelled to Malawi with his brother Rod Hall, an organic farmer, and met some of the peanut farmers who are benefiting from Fairtrade.

Harry said: “I love salted peanuts myself and feel I am doing a service to snackers everywhere who want to know the farmers who grew what they are eating have been paid a fair price. I’m working with Liberation because all of its products are Fairtrade and the company is solely run to benefit the farmers and their families.”

Harry has been heavily involved in getting the taste right for the nuts and with the pack design. The nuts will be sold on a backing card which features a cheeky design penned by Harry himself.

The nuts, which have been extra roasted for additional crunchiness and taste, will be available in 50g packs at a recommended retail sales price of 59p, an eminently affordable Fairtrade munch at this time of credit crunch.

This video features Brigido Soza, President of the Juan Francisco Paz Silva Co-operative in Nicaragua, one of the many small producer co-operatives that supply our tasty nuts. In Nicaragua's case it is Peanuts or Groundnuts. Here he is talking about how the Fairtrade premium that his farmers rec...eive for selling their groundnuts has helped to build a local school. These types of projects are an important part of the Fairtrade movement where co-operatives use the profits from trade to directly benefit the local communities in the places where that actual produce is grown. As Mr Soza says "The impact of Fairtrade in my village, in my family and in my co-operative has been really very positive."

Liberation joined forces with Innocent drinks last weekend to enjoy a rain soaked weekend of fun and frolics at the Innocent Village Fete in Regents Park London. The Nut Bus was there with bells on and our percussion and drumming sessions drew large crowds drawn by the rhythm of the djembes drums and no doubt by the e...xtraordinary sight of our multicoloured 53 year old Citroen H van. After a fraught Friday night where the Nut Bus refused to start for a number of hours, our yet-to-be named multicoloured fair trade fanfare finally rolled in to Regents Park just before they shut the gates for the evening. Everything worked out in the end and the mock village fete opened its doors to the public at 11.00 A:M. By middday we were feeding hundreds of fete folk samples of out delicious nuts and doing a roaring trade with out ‘Nuts about Fairtrade’ cotton bags. The rain held off for the whole day and a wonderful time was had by all. We returned on Sunday beneath dark moody clouds which periodically soaked the whole site but this didn’t deter the happy revellers who showed they really were nuts about Fairtrade by drumming up some delightful rhythms in between bouts of heavy rain. The nuts went down a storm again (excuse the pun) and all in all we had a fantastic time and spread the fairtrade message to literally thousands of people. Thanks to our friends at Innocent for inviting us and we’ll see you there again next year!

Please visit our Innocent photoset on Flickr to see some nutty photos of the weekend’s action.
