Last summer, Apple found itself in a pickle with the disability community. The state of Massachusetts was threatening to sue Apple for failing to make its iTunes media library accessible to blind students. Apple agreed to pay $250,000 and added audio to almost its entire iTunes library...

The irony is, Apple's accessibility failure ended up being the inspiration and biggest selling feature for their latest talking iPod shuffle line. By looking for opportunity instead of merely managing risk, they were able to market a new innovation, inspired by people who are blind, to a much broader audience.

What other innovation opportunities are waiting to be brought to market from companies who are able to take proactive measures toward universal design?
