The Morton Arboretum

The Morton Arboretum

The Morton Arboretum is the place for family fun on Sunday. First: it's the brand new Colossal Cookie Caper - where people take tree cookies and throw 'em in four types of contests. Then - the long-running Yule Log Hunt. Find the log, return to Visitor Center area and drink wassail, sing, and feel good.

The Morton Arboretum has a holiday gift, of sorts, for the environment. Crews are just about finished retrofitting and replacing light fixtures with more eco-friendly versions. Result? We'll save 83 thousand kilowatts of electricity and thousands of dollars in cost annually!

I learned to ski at Four Lakes in Lisle from a COD course in winter of 1973. That was a great snowy winter, snow till mid-March.

The Morton Arboretum just won a "Nobel Prize"! Actually, a kindergarten boy at Monroe School of Hinsdale, IL nominated the Arb for a Science & Environment "Nobel" in the school's International Awareness instruction. We won. The boy said of the Arboretum "I like this place. They plant trees, flowers, and tell us about them. Playing outside ...in the garden at the arboretum is fun. I also learned about bugs and how they help the environment."

The Morton Arboretum asks: do YOU believe climate change is radically affecting landscapes? Tell me what you think about this interesting article.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. - -- Roy Renkin is a biologist by training but a detective by inclination, and something about the willows was nagging him. The shrubs flanking a creek in Yellowstone's Blacktail drainage had never grown so tall and lush. ...

Today's Wall Street Journal op-ed page has an article written by Howard Bloom entitled, "Climate Change is Nature's Way". He writes that there have been 20 sudden global warmings in the last 120,000 years with temperatures rising up to 18 degrees in 20 years time. No smokestacks or tailpipes, just nature's way. Also, mass extinction's every 26.... See More5 million years. Why? Mother Nature is not nice. He cautions to be prepared for future challenges from nature and also not be a contributor to any extinction. Respecting the planet would be a fine start !

well, the initial question related to climate change and its affect on our natural landscapes...so - man-made or nature's way, I still believe that the answer is YES.

The Morton Arboretum asks: are you for "real" or "fake?" What I'm asking is: do you like real Xmas trees or fake ones? If you avoid real because of the needles, check this out...

As a horticulturist I am tired of working with real plants at the end of the season, so I prefer fake trees. I also like real-looking artificial indoor plants if the location is diificult for living plants.

Had a real tree for years. But now we have a pre-strung fake tree which is so easy to put up and take down. Plug it in and hang the ornaments-done. And I never have to water it. I leave it on whenever I want without worry of fire.

I would like to know how the glass behaves when the water that it "absorbed" freezes. I would really consider replacing my walkway with this stuff.

That is awesome. Down in Lake Charles, LA, they have the Sallier Oak, which is an almost 400 year old Live Oak that is held together by chains and other means where the tree has been damaged by hurricanes. This tree is so massive that the bottom limbs actually bear most of the weight of the tree and hold it up. It was one of my favorite spots in the city when I lived down there.

That is a happy story. It probably is a male Osage-Orange that, of course, does not bear the huge "horse apples." Most medium to large tree live about 150 to 300 years. It is a living historical monument to farming, that a Mr turner introduced into the North.

The Morton Arboretum is looking prettier and prettier. We got one-inch of snow yesterday, and by 7 a.m. today, we added almost another inch. Love those "Christmas card" looking pines, firs, junipers, etc in the Conifer collection with that light blanket of snow!!
