Community languages in schools
(issues of the 1970s and 1980s compared to 2009)
This display draws on materials in the Library collections which reflect approaches (attitudes, policies) to the learning and teaching of the languages of linguistic communities in the UK during the last 30+ years. It is not exhaustive – othe...r material dealing with related matters can be located using the Library catalogue.
It is possible to compare and contrast conditions that applied in the late 1970s and the 1980s, as the National Curriculum was introduced in the 1990s and in the present climate of opinion, as linguistic diversity and plurilingualism become an inescapable part of the contemporary educational landscape.
The display includes examples of CILT’s publications in this field and also reflects the National Centre’s involvement in carrying the agenda forward, notably in the current context of the Curriculum Guides and the ‘Our Languages’ project.

The CILT Library invites you to ‘Talk to the hand – using puppets in primary languages’
Following on from our successful storytelling library event in the spring, this lively, practical session will look at how to get the most out of using puppets in the primary languages classroom.
Stephen Novy of Pekko’s Puppets will ...open the event by demonstrating the activities that he offers to schools. He will also give a brief puppet show performance. In the second part of the session, Lucy Adamson, Primary Language Teaching Adviser at CILT, will show you how to make a range of puppets from simple, accessible and affordable materials.
You will then have the opportunity to make these puppets yourself before Ruth Churchill, CILT’s information Officer for Primary Languages, guides you through the NACELL collection’s resources on puppets and related activities.
When: Tuesday 9 June 2009. Refreshments from 4.30pm – the session will start at 5pm. The library will close at 7pm.
