The Islington Metal Works ‘Iddu’ (meaning ‘Him’ in Sicilian dialect), is a 360 degree artwork realised on the landscape of the active volcano Stromboli. Made over a period of four years, this 15 minute film combines 360° and 180° panoramic multi-camera views originated on Super-8 film, coupled with a soundtrack generated from the collaboration ...between James P Graham and celebrated sound artist Akio Suzuki who performed in situ on the volcano. The end result is a 12 screen dodecahedral installation within an enclosed circular space of 6m diameter which immerses the viewer into the centre of a unique, and petrifyingly beautiful landscape.
The solo show is scheduled at The Islington Metalworks, Torrens Works, 7 Torrens St, Islington, EC1V 1NQ from 8th December until 13th December 2009.
Exhibited around this reknown recycling plant will be film installation, sculpture, photography and single screen work. Open daily for the first time in the UK.from 12-6pm, and evenings on 8th, 10th & 11th until 10pm.

First presentation was at the Musée Grand Duc Jean Luxembourg (MUDAM) from Oct - Nov 2007. Generously supported by Arts Council of England, MUDAM, and NESTA Foundation

Cullen Art Services is proud to announce its inaugurating exhibition, presenting for the first time Issa Salliander and Martina von Meyenburg.

Other than being fem...ale and, coincidently, both with birth ties in Sweden, these two artists and their work don’t have much in common except that looking at it forces the viewer to think outside the box. The core of their work reveals associations to history and contemporary sentiment that translates globally.

Issa Salliander’s paintings become alive before the viewer. Using history of art as much as Rock ‘n’ Roll irreverence and contemporary politics, her work conveys tremendous physical involvement, is mesmerising and repulsive at the same time. The Maobino series is a study on authority and race. Portraying an African albino child’s face upon the shoulders of a celebrated dictator questions the innocence of it as much as behaviour under suppression in general. Pink Flamingo is a vast body landscape screaming for attention and demanding a second take, as the sweeping brushwork and abundance of paint distract from the actual image of the scarred torso. Citing phenomena and fascinations of extremes, Issa’s inspiration draws upon the films of Cronenberg as much as the most obvious sexual references. 17th century Dutch still life painting meets Cezanne’s brushwork and the lyrics of Lynyrd Skynyrd in Freebird, a painting of a dead bird. Here Issa’s subtle sense of humour catches up with the most diverse associations to freedom.

Martina von Meyenburg presents a group of sculptures that seem to belong to a time long gone. Triggering all sorts of recollections, these memory-traced objects are full of fantasy, fairy tales and ultimately have a very surreal aura to them. Martina takes found objects out of their context and uses their symbolism to tell a new story. On its own time presents the housing of an old clock inserted with honeycomb and thus opens up a new dialogue about time and our consumer society. A silver milk saucer is upturned and titled das verkehrte Mädchen, merging a text she wrote as a child with Dada inspirations. Her artworks invite us to escape our daily routine and open up to something unexpected, like entering a Wunderkammer. Cut Loose consists of an outdated meter band that, ironically, is identical on both sides and intertwined with a crude chopping knife, shedding new life into the concept ‘size matters’. These every day objects are personalised by Martina in an often almost comical way that inspires our imagination and questions bourgeois values as much as any given standards.

By many, the location of The Islington Metal Works will be remembered from last year’s intervention by Carsten Höller and the Prada Foundation, called The Double Club. I am delighted to be able to inaugurate our business in this Victorian warehouse, which by itself has a fascinating history. In the 19th century, 50,000 horses provided power for London’s transport. 7 Torrens Street was built to stable hundreds of horses on three floors and featured wide and shallow stairs to the top floor for the horses to walk up. Since 1914, when horses had been made obsolete by electric trams the building has been used as The Islington Metal works. Much of its original structure has over the past decades been restored and the central glazed courtyard retains all of the original architectural features creating this inspiring workspace.

Issa Salliander, born 1982, obtained her Master at the City and Guilds of London Art School in 2006 and has since been working in her studio in London.

Martina von Meyenburg, born 1975, obtained her Bachelor at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2007 and has since been working in her studio in Zurich.

Cullen Art Services would like to thank the Embassy of Switzerland, the Swiss Cultural Fund Britain, Fetherstonhaugh and The Islington Metal Works for their invaluable support.
