Random Thoughts from the Summit of Aconcagua:

Life is all about summiting your problems and descending from the pain. Here are some notes from my South America journal in 2000.
"On the deepest level, this has been a changing day in my life. I learned that my body is strong, at least for now, and so is my spirit. I am ...ready to speak of my disease without feeling shame. The time has come to let go of the pain and start living again. I have learned many things on this climb, but mostly I learned about courage…the courage to face your problems and move forward, one step at a time. I am alive. I am happy. What more could I want? Not a thing."Read More

MY NEW BOOK: EVEREST Climbing Beyond Our Limits_By Lori Schneider

I am releasing a Limited Edition Autographed copy of my new book this week, EVEREST Climbing Beyond Our Limits, just in time for the holidays.

I created this book to help raise money for the Empowerment Through Adventure Scholarship Fund, helping othe...rs with MS to live their dreams. All proceeds from the book sales go to further our efforts.

Order an 8 X 11 Hard Cover Limited Edition copy at

It includes spectacular photos from my Everest climb, and journal entries that will awaken the adventurer inside all of us.
Be a part of the dream…Others who are battling MS will thank you for the donation to the scholarship fund!

Random Thoughts From My Journal While On Everest – "We are now switching from hikers to climbers, as we practice ascending steep icy walls with nothing but our hands and feet. So I asked myself…what’s a small town girl from Wisconsin doing in the world of mountaineering? I had no sponsors to help pay for my climb, no ...formal mountaineering training, and no money to repay the $80K loan I took out to do it. Am I crazy…or just a girl trying to live a dream? A girl trying to overcome her fear of MS. So what is wrong with that? It’s ok to take a Leap Of Faith and dream big."Read More

"It always seems impossible until it's done." - Nelson Mandela

-Since summiting Everest on May 23rd, 2009, I now believe in the impossible! Ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things, if we put our mind to it. I will be presenting my Everest story to the MS International Federation council in Chicago, IL on No...v. 3, as they meet to discuss plans for the 2010 World MS Day. I am excited to be a part of this global effort! Check out the link below, from my recent trip to London, where I presented the World MS Day flag to the dedicated workers at the international headquarters.

"Seven Summits" #4 2006 Denali N. America
As a woman, Denali was the most physically demanding of the Seven Summits for me. We carried 60 pounds (27 kilos) of supplies on our back, while dragging another 60 pounds in a sled carrying our food and gear. After returning from a successful but really strenuous climb, ...my body was exhausted. Somehow, my tired brain told me this next adventure was a good idea....wrong! I ran the Chicago marathon three weeks later in the heat of the summer, and began to lose vision in one eye. I was told that it was my MS coming back to haunt me. I went back to the hospital for a week of IV steroid treatments, and my vision eventually returned to normal. I was also experiencing back pain on Denali, and I found out that I had a pinched nerve in my spine, and needed back surgery. The nerve had been damaged due to a faulty spinal tap done years earlier during the MS testing. It took me about a year to regain my strength after the surgery. My lesson...never give up hope that your health may turn around, even if only a little. I know that I am not getting any younger, and all of these physical goals will either happen or not, depending on how my body holds up. I don't know my future, but I know my today. Think I will use it wisely. Time for a walk. My mom always said...Make it a good day. Hope yours is. -LoriRead More

Tips From The Top - Part 2
-When I climb or run races, I use a strip of duct tape to cover the back of my heels. It helps prevent hot spots and blisters, and stays on better than a Band-aid.
-Clip toenails short to prevent toe jamming. On downhill sections shoes should be laced tighter, to keep feet from sliding forwa...rd. Loosen on the uphill.
-I use two adjustable poles when I hike or walk, to help maintain better balance, and lessen the stress on my knees.
-Keep a positive attitude. Exercise is hard work, but the reward of accomplishing a goal or giving it your best shot, will last long after the pain is gone.

Life Lesson-Family is Important:
My hero, my dad, my example of striving for your goals in life, these are the things Neal Schneider brings to my life. I was lucky to have had a pretty normal childhood. My parents loved me and my 3 brothers, Bill, Joe, and Danny were my knights in shining armor. My childhood was lac...ed with happy memories. When I grew up and got married, I moved across country and missed the closeness that I had once had with my family. In 1992, I decided to set out on a 2 year backpacking trip around the world with my husband. We saved our money for years, working our day jobs, followed by house sitting and childcare at night, to save the needed funds for our adventure. We met my dad in Africa, the summer of ’93 for an attempt of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. What had been my father’s dream to climb 'Kili', became a goal I would strive for during much of my adult life. That trip was one of many powerful experiences I had with my dad, that bonded us for life. We created memories that will last us a lifetime. I hope you are lucky enough to spend time with family and create memories together also.Read More

Life is so short. In many ways it is cruel. All too often it is only when we are faced with our imminent demise do we suddenly wake up and start to appreciate the true joy of living and experiencing everything that our beautiful planet has to offer. ...

Training Tips from Athlete and Mountain Climber Lori Schneider

“ A new season on Everest is about to begin! Good luck to all of you who will attempts physical goals in your own life this year. I am not a professional trainer or medical person. I am just a 53-year-old woman with MS, who has m...aintained an active lifestyle. These are some things that have worked for ME both in mountain climbing and marathoning. Listen to your body, listen to your doctor, and CHALLENGE yourself!” –Lori Schneider

1. In the weeks before your climb or run, begin a heavy hydration program. Get your body used to consuming and processing two or more liters of water a day. On heavy exercise days, I drink an electrolyte beverage, or simply add an electrolyte powder to my water. It helps aid in hydration and also causes your body to retain valuable fluids."

THOUGHTS about when I was first diagnosed with MS years ago:
Nothing made sense in my life anymore and I became a person who had lost a sense of self. After wading through the tears and fears of what my life was to become, I stepped away a wounded person, with injuries so deep I felt they would never heal. I was blee...ding from an open wound with no bandage to wrap around me. My heart was heavy, and my brain was aching from thoughts of what would become of me. I panicked and ran way from my life, fearing that I needed to gain independence while I still had my strength. I left my home, my husband, my job, my friends, and the sense of purpose that I once had. I slipped into the void of that deep emotional crevasse, unhooked from my safety lines that would have once pulled me back into reality.Read More

Years ago I feared I might not walk someday, due to my multiple sclerosis. I now think of my MS as a gift in some ways. It has brought about many changes in my life and has shaped me into the stronger person that I am now. I have learned that life is unpredictable and not always easy, but if we approach it with a fe...eling of gratitude, we can find the positive things that help us to grow. These things shape who we are. I am thankful for all that has been given to me, all that has been taken away, and all that I have been left with."Read More

Before I left, I copied these words onto the first page of my Everest journal. I reread them often, to remind myself to take risks, challenge myself, and live my best life. Here are the words that continue to inspire me:
"Live with intention.
Walk to the edge.
Listen hard.
Practice wellness.
Play with abandon.
Laugh.
Choose... with no regret.
Continue to learn.
Appreciate your friends.
Do what you love.
Live as if this is all there is."

This quote reminds me of why I love to travel & climb:
“Women who travel as I do are dreamers. Our lives seem to be lives of endless possibility. Like readers of romances, we think that anything can happen to us at any time. We forget that this is not our real life-our life of domestic details, work pressures, attemp...ts and failures at human relations. We keep moving. From anecdote to anecdote, from hope to hope. Around the next bend something new will befall us. Our motion is forward, whether by train or day-dream. Our sights are on the horizon, across strange terrain, vast desert, unfordable rivers, impenetrable ice peaks.” -Mary Morris, 'Nothing To Declare'Read More
