Until his death Monday night at age 102, lifelong Visalian Ralph Moore, celebrated internationally for introducing more than 500 miniature-rose varieties to the marketplace, remained a scientist.

Robert van de Hoek, (who likes to be called Roy), is a naturalist and geographer, with his university degrees from California State University at Northridge (CSUN). He recently obtained a certificate in Environmental Horticulture from El Camino College. ... Roy has been a college instructor at four California Community Colleges, as well as a wildlife biologist, archaeologist, and hydrologic technician for the U. S. Forest Service and the U. S. Department of Interior. He currently works for the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation for the past 12 years.
A few years ago he co-founded the Ballona Institute, on the coast of Los Angeles at Playa del Rey, adjacent to the Ballona Wetlands Ecosystem, the last remaining salt marsh, coastal prairie, and coastal sand dune in Los Angeles County. He is active in the Sierra Club as the chair of the Los Angeles River Committee, but he is also the president of the Whittier Audubon Society, as well as a historian for the Los Angeles Audubon Society. He is a former president of a chapter of the California Native Plant Society and a member of the Southern California Academy of Sciences. He is involved with the Southern California Bluebird Club, whose goal is to bring back the bluebird to southern California, with a focus on parks, cemeteries, golf courses, estates, and homes. He has established butterfly garden and butterfly sanctuary at the Ballona Wetlands near the coast for the Wandering Skipper and Pygmy Blue Butterfly.
