Sean Anderson
Kentucky filmmaker Sean Anderson apparently is drawn to obscurity if the subjects of his two feature documentaries are any indication: William Goebel (who?) and punk rock ukulele (huh??). While attending the documentary film program at Stanford University, he ...made short films about a race horse trainer struggling along with a single, very mediocre horse and a Russian expatriot attempting to teach American children something about life by teaching them chess: a sometimes thankless job but never a hopeless one.
Anderson grew up in Pikeville, Ky. and graduated from the University of Kentucky. After living in Washington, D.C. and Oakland, Calif., he now lives in Lexington, Ky. where he works as a filmmaker.
...damn bad oyster:
The Times of William Goebel, governor
Tuesday October 20th @ 7pm
Visiting Filmmaker Sean Anderson
2007, 58 minutes
'...damn bad oyster: The Times of William Goebel, governor' deals with someone who has become an obscure figure in Kentucky history despite the impact he had during one of the state's most contentious periods.
Goebel rose from the streets of Covington to become one of the most powerful leaders in the Kentucky legislature during the 1890s. He organized a movement that championed economic and political reforms and attempted to help the workers and common people of Kentucky by curtailing the corrupt and pervasive power of corporations, particularly the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. He also earned a reputation as a ruthless political boss, which made him an object of suspicion to allies and enemies alike. His cold and aloof personality, in contrast to most Kentucky politicians of the day, contributed to the Goebel enigma and made it easier for his foes to hate him. Goebel was assassinated in 1900. Despite the upheaval that followed, the memory of Goebel, who he was and what he stood for, quickly faded and he was nearly forgotten.
"...damn bad oyster" (the title alludes to Goebel's uncertain last words) attempts to shed some light on Goebel and the rancorous era in which he lived. It premiered on KET in January 2009 and still appears on the Kentucky Channel at odd hours.

Rock That Uke
Tuesday October 20th @ 9pm
Visiting Filmmaker Sean Anderson
2003, 62 minutes
Rock That Uke' explores the world of punk rock ukulele, for want of a more exact description. It's really about a variety of people who express their hopes, fears, yearning, anger, dissatisfaction, joy, art, etc., through a very small sound hole. Often amplified and distorted. "Rock That Uke" has screened on KET and at venues across the United States, and has a devoted following in Australia and some corners of England, according to the rumors. It is co-directed by William Preston Robertson.
62minutes.
