As people of faith, how do we approach the current health care crisis? Some claiming to have a "biblical worldview" insist that we are responsible only for ourselves and are not "our brother's keeper."
The question we invite all to discuss at this Faith and Life Forum is: If our health care system took seriously the va...lues and vision of Jesus of Nazareth, what would it look like?
We welcome as our guest to share his experience and knowledge Dr. David Baltierra, Director of a Rural Family Medicine Program and a member of PHYSICIANS FOR A NATIONAL HEALTH PROGRAM.

Lo...rd of the Dance
I danced in the morning when the world was begun
And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun
And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth
At Bethlehem I had my birth
“Dance, then, wherever you may be
I am the Lord of the Dance,” said he
“And I’ll lead you all wherever you may be,
And I’ll lead you all in the dance,” said he
I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee
But they would not dance and they wouldn’t follow me
I danced for the fishermen, for James and John
They came with me and the dance went on
I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame
The holy people said it was a shame
They whipped and they stripped me and they hung me on high
And they left me there on a cross to die
I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black
It’s hard to dance with the devil on your back
They buried my body and they thought I’d gone
But I am the dance and I still go on
They cut me down and I leapt up high
For I am the life that will never, never die
I’ll live in you if you’ll live in me
“I am the Lord of the Dance,” said he
.
This would be a good time to invite friends and neighbors to experience the Resurrection Spirit as God continues to breathe new life into our mix, and to create new and different life on the dry bones of our ancient faith tradition!

TO MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF ST. JAMES UCC....
This Wednesday is ASH WEDNESDAY and marks the beginning of The Lenten Season... and, as in the past, we will be observing that important day in our worship life with a special evening of meditation and reflection... culminating with a brief liturgy which will include the ...IMPOSITION OF ASHES....
But we're beginning the evening just a little differently... at 6:00 p.m.... with a modest soup and sandwich meal... along with viewing the movie...
ROMERO
He started a revolution without guns, without an army, without fear. Because one person's courage can be the most powerful weapon of all.
The movie documents the story of ARCHBISHOP OSCAR ROMERO of El Salvador, who made the ultimate sacrifice in a passionate stand against social injustice and oppression in his country.
It chronicles his transformation... his transfiguration if you will... from an a-political, complacent priest to a committed leader of the Salvadoran people.
The acclaimed, and now deceased actor, RAUL JULIA, plays the leading role as a person called by God in the unspeakable events going on around him to take a stand - a stand that ultimately leads to his assassination in 1980 at the hands of a military junta.
It is a riveting story that is certainly a meaningful way to begin the Lenten Season. We will begin showing the movie PROMPTLY at 6:15 p.m.
The ASH WEDNESDAY LITURGY with IMPOSITION OF ASHES will begin at 8:00 p.m.
You might want to share this information with friends and neighbors... it is certainly an appropriate way to begin the LENTEN SEASON....

(You can watch the trailer and an interview with the filmmaker on the St. James UCC page.)
On Easter 2006, six ordinary people left their homes, jobs and families for a journey on foot into the heart of America. Their intention, as Crosswalk America, was to start a conversation about the principles of love, compassion a...nd generosity taught by Jesus - at a time when Christianity has become associated for many people with hate and intolerance. The Asphalt Gospel is the story of what they found.
Joyfully and unapologetically Christian, Crosswalk America embarked on their journey determined to meet people where they are, hear their stories, and let them know that there are new voices emerging to challenge the fundamentalism that has become the dominant public face of Christianity.
They found both fear and hospitality - sometimes in unexpected places. They met people who were embarrassed to admit they were Christians, and had stopped going to church; protesters who proudly wore the label "intolerant;" parents afraid to openly accept and love their gay children, and people on opposing sides of an issue who were surprised to find humanity in each other. They also met many, many people along the way who told them quietly, "Thank you for walking for me."
Please join the St. James community the evening of March 7 to watch and discuss the film. It will probably surprise you, and maybe make you feel a little more hopeful about the future. The event is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.
These are some of the voices from the film:
“I’ve been very sad, very depressed, and almost ashamed to be a Christian, and it’s been embarrassing to me, and I’ve almost been hiding.”
“I had actually stopped going to church; there’s so much hate, and so much hypocrisy.”
“When Jesus talked about the judgment of God; he didn’t talk anything about religion. He said, what kind of person are you? Do you feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick, give a hoot? That’s the question.”
“If Jesus of Nazereth is an American obsession, I suggest that we study what he actually taught…it’s not about liberal or conservative, it’s about what kind of person did this person who we call the lord of our lives call us to be?”
“Oh, I couldn’t break bread with people who don’t follow Biblical teachings. I’m sorry.”
“The message of peace and justice is really strong with people 25 and under - it’s just not connected at all to religion.”
“I’m a fourth-generation classical Pentecostal, hellfire and brimstone, you’ll go to hell, my-way-or-hell-way, preacher. For me to be here today is heresy, and I’m so thrilled to be among the heretics of modern days.”
“These are the nicest people - I can’t believe anyone was worried - why would anyone not welcome these people, they are the kindest, most interesting group of folks.”
“Who would Jesus bomb? That’s not like a sophomoric question, that’s actually a deep theological question, and I expect somebody should try to answer it.”
“I remember one woman in a very small town, a very conservative town, going to a very fundamentalist church. She came up to Eric and I, and said ‘thank you so much for walking. My son came out to us as homosexual a few years ago; my husband has disowned him; I have no one to turn to at my church; I don’t know who I can talk to in my community,’ and she said thank you, thank you for walking for me. And we have that story, in different flavors, over and over.”
“I got tired of having to tell people that when I say I’m a Christian I’m not like those other people. When I say I’m a Christian, I don’t think you have to check your brain at the door. It is no longer ok for us to sit back, and let them take the name of Jesus.”
“We must speak up and be counted; there are many of us out there. And we cannot find each other and show others that God loves us beyond our wildest imagination, until we all find our voices.”
A long walk can make a big difference.

St. James United Church of Christ offers Sunday School for children K-7 and Adult Education at 10:00 am each 2nd Sunday of the month. The 11:00 am service celebrates Evolution Sunday and the 200th Anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth, and concerns the "evil spirits" of religious fanaticism that... would reject any new knowledge or new understandings of God and humanity - in Jesus' time and in our communities today.
