Happy Critters Dog Training and Grooming This is the Association of Pet Dog Trainers position statement about "dominance". I completely agree with this statement. I am more than happy to answer any questions that any of you may have. There's a lot of outdated information on the web, in books, and on TV.

Happy Critters Dog Training and Grooming The ticks are out and they're looking for someplace warm to live! Check your dog everytime they come inside from the outdoors. If you're using a flea and tick preventative don't let it lapse and be sure to follow the instructions carefully. Don't use it the day your dog gets groomed. Apply it a few days before or after a bath

Happy Critters Dog Training and Grooming A quick piece of advise for dog lovers- A dog that has rolled onto its back with its belly up, doesn't necessarily want a belly rub. I know we want to pet the dog and make them happy but, sometimes they're being submissive and/or fearful!! Watch the ears and eyes to see if the dog is cringing and frozen or just being s...illy. Giving a belly rub to a frightened dog can get someone hurt.

Happy Critters Dog Training and Grooming It a good start, but will it help prevent puppy mills and not hurt responsible breeders? PA has New Commercial Kennel Requirements starting today. "The new laws only apply to “class-C” commercial kennels that breed dogs and either sell dogs to dealers or pet stores, or sell more than 60 dogs a year." The mills are sell...ing online and through brokers. FYI Anyone who has multiple litters of puppies and no parents on site is a broker for a mill- whether they know it or not. http://www.agriculture.state.pa.us/agriculture/cwp/view.asp?Q=153373&A=390

Harrisburg – When strict new requirements for cage size, exercise and flooring standards go into effect for commercial dog kennels in Pennsylvania on Oct. 9, the Department of Agriculture will deploy teams of staff to ensure those laws are enforced.

Happy Critters Dog Training and Grooming The link takes you to the research but here is a quick summary. "4.5. Conclusions and recommendations- We concluded that shocks received during training are not only unpleasant but also painful and frightening. Furthermore, we found that shocked dogs are more stressful on the training grounds than controls, but also in... a park. This implies, that whenever the handler is around, the dog seems to expect an aversive event to occur. A second unwanted association might be that the dogs have learned to associate a specific command with getting a shock."

Happy Critters Dog Training and Grooming To answer Jill's question. This is Dr Karen Overall's letter about Shock collars. Invisible fences are also shock collars.

Jill Irving When you have a chance, I'd like to "hear" more about the invisible fences. I've seen stuff about them still letting other animals etc in, but I'd like to know more about issues with the training and/or fence technologies themselves.

Hi Jill. Great question and I'm posting some links for you. Being off lead requires teaching a dog the boudaries of their yard, a proper recall, and a proper response to people and animals is necessary training. A device can't replace that training.

A dog that gets hurt- that's what the collars do- may start to think that the yard hurts them, or that the kids outside the yard hurt them, or that other animals hurt them. This often leads to agression or fear- then leading to agression.

A dog that gets hurt when it makes a mistake and leaves the yard won't come back into the yard. They are not safely contained. The primary reason for people buying these things.... See More

So that's the quick answer. Not safely contained and creating an unsafe association with strangers, children, other animals.

Happy Critters Dog Training and Grooming I wanted to share this article with everyone. I have a few things to add to it. "Invisible Fences" cause the same problems. The dog may be able to dash around in the yard but will know that it can't get away and have the same feeling of being cornered. The danger is the same.

Tethers are OK for the 5 minute potty break ...with someone close by. I don't think that they should be made illegal for people who use them properly. Invisible fences should be made illegal but that's an entirely different post.
