Purists look away now! The song is performed in a style which is (perhaps) a little irreverent. It was collected from a Sussex "choirman" by Heywood Sumner (Arts and Crafts artist) in the 1880's. There is no Emma in the song ... and the girl in it (Mary) is less than faithful!!
The video was taken by Simon Ritchie (no,... not THAT Simon Ritchie) while Ralph and Irene were performing a floorspot at the Music Institute Club in Guildford in April 2009. It is one of the numbers that we use in the "Listen and You Shall Hear" show.

Narration is provided by me (Irene Shettle) with additional asides from my partner in crime..., Ralphie Jordan. Musically, I provide the vocals (and some duet concertina work in a couple of Duet duets..), and accompaniment is provided by Ralphie on (variously but not together) Maccann duet concertina, guitar or bouzouki.
The songs were collected by Lucy, and the quotations are taken from her diaries, correspondence and written works.

Errrmmm .. no it wasn't Lucy that published that last - it was me, Irene Shettle. I knew she'd taken over my life, but not to that extent [grins]

Hi !
If you've joined the "fans" many thanks. I've been researching Lucy for around 4 or 5 years now. I'd known about her existence for many years, and was aware that she was a folksong collector. It was only after starting to read her diaries and correspondence at the Surrey History Centre in Woking,Surrey that I bega...n to realise just how important she was - not just to the world of folk music, but to the world of classical music as well. Since 9 August 2008 was the 150th anniversary of her birth - a month which also saw the anniversary of the death of her friend and one time "pupil" Vaughan Williams - and in view of the fact that much celebration has been made of his anniversary, but little of hers, I felt it was about time she got a fan base of her own !!! [grin]
Thanks for joining up!!
Irene
