Lucy Broadwood We had a really enjoyable (or spiffing to quote RJ) gig at the Black Diamond Club in Birmingham last night. (The travel up and back was appalling, but the club and it's members were absolutely lovely). Thanks Black Diamond!!

Lucy Broadwood Purists look away now! The song is performed in a style which is (perhaps) a little irreverent. It was collected from a Sussex "choirman" by Heywood Sumner (Arts and Crafts artist) in the 1880's. There is no Emma in the song ... and the girl in it (Mary) is less than faithful!!

The video was taken by Simon Ritchie (no,... not THAT Simon Ritchie) while Ralph and Irene were performing a floorspot at the Music Institute Club in Guildford in April 2009. It is one of the numbers that we use in the "Listen and You Shall Hear" show.

I forgot to say why this is relevant to Lucy. Sumner and Lucy bumped into each other at a social event in London, and exchanged enthusiasms about folk song collecting. According to David Gregory, this was at a time when Lucy's ardour for collection work was waning somewhat, and he spurred her on to take up the collecting reins again. The song was one that Lucy and J A Fuller Maitland included in the contents of their work "English County Songs" which was published in 1893.

Lucy Broadwood Hi !

If you've joined the "fans" many thanks. I've been researching Lucy for around 4 or 5 years now. I'd known about her existence for many years, and was aware that she was a folksong collector. It was only after starting to read her diaries and correspondence at the Surrey History Centre in Woking,Surrey that I bega...n to realise just how important she was - not just to the world of folk music, but to the world of classical music as well. Since 9 August 2008 was the 150th anniversary of her birth - a month which also saw the anniversary of the death of her friend and one time "pupil" Vaughan Williams - and in view of the fact that much celebration has been made of his anniversary, but little of hers, I felt it was about time she got a fan base of her own !!! [grin]

Thanks for joining up!!
Irene
