Symphony Nova Scotia partners with Halifax pop-rockers MIR
Performance to be broadcast nationwide on Christmas Day
Halifax NS – Symphony Nova Scotia takes the stage with progressive pop trio MIR at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in Halifax on Friday, November 27 at 7:30 pm and again at
St. John’sAnglican Church in Lunenburg... on Saturday, November 28 at 7:30 pm.
This breathtaking holiday-themed symphonic collaboration will feature a full program of MIR’s intricate music, with arrangements written by MIR frontman Asif Illyas. Asif has often arranged for Symphony Nova Scotia in the past for concerts with guest artists like Gordie Sampson, Rose Cousins, and Buck 65.
“We’ve been wanting to do this collaboration for years,” says Asif. “It’s the most unique show we’ve ever done. We’ve got some great instrumentation, and out of the 17 songs we’ll be performing, 16 will be fully orchestrated. Whether you’ve seen us before or you haven’t, you don’t want to miss this one.”
The concert will have a distinct holiday theme, featuring five songs from MIR’s critically acclaimed holiday EP, A Soldier’s Carol. And thanks to the enthusiastic support of CBC Radio, the entire Halifax concert will be recorded and broadcast nationwide on CBC Radio 1 and CBC Radio 2 on Christmas day.
Along with some of MIR’s biggest hits from their albums The Acoustic Record and OK2GO!, including U Dream, Homeless, Be Strong and Walk On, and So Perfect, the performances will also feature new material written especially for this collaboration.
“These concerts are going to be a real treat,” says Symphony Nova Scotia Resident Conductor Martin MacDonald, who will be conducting both performances. “Asif has really done an excellent job with the arrangements – they’re really colourful and exciting, while still being very accessible.”

This event was created to raise funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Music for the Cure is a non-profit organization based out of Halifax. With popular Halifax singer-songwriter Sheva at the helm of the project, local and international musicians will join together to perform and raise funds... for breast cancer research.
Sheva, who recently began donating $1.00 from each sale of her CD “The Closest Thing” to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, felt that creating Music for the Cure would provide local and international musicians an opportunity to work together for a valuable cause. With the anticipated success of the March event, Music for the Cure aims to provide other musicians and charitable organizations a chance to partner up throughout the year under the auspice of working towards a cure for whichever organization they deem worthy.
Music for the Cure will be hosted by Keliegh Butt of FX 101.9, http://www.fx1019.ca, for the 2nd annual benefit concert on Friday March 6th, 2009 in the Imperial Ballroom at the Lord Nelson Hotel in Halifax. With all ticket proceeds from this event being donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, and a superior lineup of music and entertainment on the program, it is an evening not to be missed.
