Overview
What is the MLK Challenge?: The MLK Challenge is a model for the MLK Day of Service specifically designed to engage college students in exciting, challenging, and meaningful service in honor of Dr. King.

The day is a day of service, with a twist. Students are placed into groups randomly, service projects ("challenges") are also chosen randomly. The day focuses on educating participants about Dr. King's commitment to equality and social justice, team-building and problem-solving, and post-service reflection.

MLK Day of Service 2009: With a generous MLK Day of Service grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service, North Carolina Campus Compact is working with campuses all across the country to implement the MLK Challenge to honor Dr. King through service. Currently, 29 states will host MLK Challenge events on 126 university and community college campuses for MLK Day 2009!!

Grants Available to Institutions of Higher Education to Promote MLK Day of Service 2010
NC Campus Compact, a national lead agency selected by the Corporation for National and Community Service to promote the 2010 MLK Day of Service, is now accepting applications from out-of-network institutions of higher education. The... application deadline is August 12, 2009. Last year we awarded $25,000 in out-of-network funds to 28 institutions who mobilized 5800 volunteers on the 2009 MLK Day of Service.

Grants are available in increments of $1,000 and $2,500. Institutions in the following states are not eligible to apply for an out-of-network grant because the Campus Compact state office applied for an in-network grant: Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Applications are accepted from institutions in any state not mentioned above. We strongly encourage applications on behalf of a group/coalition of institutions, but please note that only one institution can serve as the subgrantee.

The Request for Proposals and Application are available at http://org.elon.edu/nccc/resources/OutofNetworkMLK.html.

For information about the national MLK Day of Service visit www.mlkday.gov.

MLK Challenge Dr. King once said, "Let us move on in these powerful days, these days of challenge, to make America what it ought to be." Thanks to everyone -- college students, families, faith groups, youth, and many many more -- who volunteered on Monday & helped make the 2009 MLK Day of Service a huge success!
