Maboroshi Wine

Maboroshi Wine Our summer has finally arrived. At least for a few days. Veraison is nearly 75% complete. And yes the birds are coming by to check on the status daily. Up goes that awful bird netting this week. I may need to get something a bit more heavy duty as the raccoons aren't easily deterred by it.

Maboroshi Wine got corks? got 15 lbs of wine corks (approx. 1650). I bet some of you do. How about recycling them...we're often asked what to do about them. Can't compost them, they just never breakdown fast enough. Take a look at this, http://recork.org/get-involved/consumers/

    • Maboroshi Wine Thanks. I never thought I'd be so stricken, it took me a couple days to respond. This weekend was a bit traumatic for both Tom & I; a farmer I am not.

Maboroshi Wine The fog bank lingers until 11:00am everyday for the past 2 weeks. May be time for a biodynamic prep 508 (Equisteum or Horsetail) spray. High in silica; it wards off fungal diseases like powdery mildew in the vineyard. It's worth a try, since I've tried everything else organically possible. Here's a pic.

Maboroshi Wine Where's the heat? August is near and we're still hanging green, green berries. Could be looking at a mid Oct. harvest? Been working to keep the vines up and clean around the clusters to avoid any chance of mildew. Looks nice and tidy. Our new ram; Dave "Pretty Boy" Alejandro (recent wwoofers helped name him) is se...ttling in. Our pygmy goat, Shakira, has taken a liking to him. Could she be switching teams.

Maboroshi Wine Biody prep 500 (cow horn dung) composted for 6 month within the earth; we dig it up in the spring and apply at least 2 times a year - one in spring and again in autumn to improve the soil structure.

Maboroshi Wine Got a late start on shearing the sheep. What an experience! And what to do with the wool. Thought about composting it, the whole biodynamic theme. Not into cleaning, combing it for yarn. Check this out instead - a fiber recycling movement to collect hair (fur, etc) for oil spill clean-ups. Oil collected with "hair ...mats" can even be "detoxified" and composted. Hmm, maybe we all need a haircut.

They have great work ethic; are always willing to help out and have even greater stories to share. This week we have thoroughly enjoyed putting our wwoofers , Brice & Sandra, to work. Thanks guys.

Maboroshi Wine Another lamb was born this a.m. in the pouring rain! Quite healthy. I spend more time with the farm animals than I do on the vineyard these days!

Maboroshi Wine Something happened to Tom today! He's acting peculiar; almost too nice. Must of been the warm breeze that passed through today. He's suggesting a Pinot Noir Spring Fling sale. I promise you this mood won't last long. www.maboroshiwine.com

Maboroshi Wine The babydoll sheep are settling in! The lambs jump about and chase each other while the moms eagerly work away at the spring weeds in the vine rows. Their focus is on the ground, as there's plenty to eat so far. But we'll keep an eye on them to make sure their sights are not on the buds! We had budbreak on 21 March.... One weak ram lamb was born about 10 days ago, but he's doing great after a little coaxing.
