University of Illinois Extension - McDonough Unit Interested in becoming a Master Gardener? Master Gardeners are instructed through an extensive horticulture course. Participants then give back 60 hours of volunteer service. Classes begin January 14 and run each Thursday from 9am -3:30 through March 25. Registration deadline is December 11th. An introduction to pastry making workshop is being offered by the University of Illinois Extension, McDonough County. This one-session class will be held of November 3, 2009, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the 4-H Center, 3028 W. Jackson, Macomb. The cost for this class is $12 per person or $20 for an adult/child pair. For ...youth 8-18 years of age, you do not have to be a 4-H member to attend. Minimum of 5 enrollment for class to be held. The class, taught by Shirley Camp, Nutrition Educator for U of I Extnesion, will include demonstrations, but will be primarily a hands-on workshop. Participants will learn how to make basic pie crust dough and will use the dough to make a one-crust pie shell, an individual lemon tart and an apple turnover to take home.
Participants should bring a rolling pin, pastry blender and pastry cloth (both are optional), and an 8 or 9-inch pie pan and an apron. There will also be emphasis on safe and healthy cooking. It is requested that hand or wrist jewelry are not worn, if possible.
