Imazighen: The Berbers of Morocco

H-Auditorium / 6:00 - 7:30pm

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to listen to two Moroccan Berber scholars (see bios below).They will discuss issues of historical and contemporary challenges facing Moroccan Berbers, the indigenous people of Northern Africa. They will cover themes of education, colonization/de-colonization, language, social movements, governance, and many others.

Mokhtar Bouba holds a M.Ed in Education for Social Justice from Keene State College, New Hampshire,where he analyzed the narratives of tracking in North American High Schools and an M.A. in Service, Leadership and Management from the SIT Graduate Institute, Vermont where he completed his thesis on initiatives to teach Tamazight in Moroccan schools. He also holds a BA in English Language and Literature from Qadi Ayyad University in Marrakech, Morocco.

Mokhtar served for more than eight years as an Academic Coordinator and Program Development Specialist at the Center for Cross Cultural Learning in Rabat, Morocco, where he was the Program Coordinator for the SIT Study Abroad Morocco: Culture and Society Program. He designed and directed many exchange programs in Morocco such as the Experiment in International Living and the Elderhostel Morocco Programs. He academically advised many SIT Study Abroad students and Fulbright fellows, as well as teaching Tamazight (Berber) and Moroccan Arabic at the Peace Corps Morocco Training Center and the Center for Cross Cultural Learning. He also served as an Arabic instructor at the SIT Graduate Institute in Vermont where he helped to redesign the Arabic program for graduate students. In 2008, he joined the SIT Study Abroad Jordan: Modernization and Social Change Program as an Academic Director.

Fluent in several languages (Tamazight, Moroccan Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic, Hassania, French and English), he has written and lectured about Amazigh (Berber) culture and art. He is also an artist, a musician, a writer and an activist on indigenous people's issues.

Jamila Chahboun holds a M.A. in Social Justice in Intercultural Relations form the SIT Graduate Institute, Brattleboro, VT. Her thesis analyzed Amazigh Women and the Re-definition of Political Space in Morocco. She holds a B.A. in English Linguistics from Ibn Tofail University in Kenitra, Morocco. Jamila is fluent in many languages, including: Berber, Morrocan Arabic, Classical Arabic, French & English.

Jamila served more than five years a a Language Instructor and a Cross-Cultural Educator at the Center for Cross-Cultural Learning in Rabat, Morocco. Additionally, she worked as a Program Coordinator for the SIT Study Abroad, Elderhostel and Experiment in Interntional Living programs and many other exchange programs.

In 2003, Jamila served as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Illinois in Chicago where she taught Arabic. For the last four years, Jamila worked as an Arabic Instructor for undergraduate students at Marlboro College, Vermont and the SIT Graduate Institute, Vermont, where she helped to redesign the Arabic program for graduate students

Since 2007, Jamila has been working as a consultant at SIT Study Abroad assisting to conceptualize and design SIT Study Abroad's Arabic Language Programs in North Africa and the Middle East. Most recently, Jamila has accepted a position at Dartmouth College to teach Arabic Language & Culture.

Angela Jeffers spent three years as a Peace Corps Volunteer providing HIV Educationand Life Skills training in Malawi, a small country in south east Africa. Upon returning to the U.S., she earned her MA in Sustainable Development, focused in Public Health, from the SIT Graduate Institute. She has spent the last five years managing HIV prevention and care programs in methadone clinics in the Bronx, NY.
