Debate time, people. The harrowing and heartbreaking movie PRECIOUS, winner of the Sundance Narrative Grand Jury Prize, opened on 18 screens this weekend, and averaged an unheard-of $100,00 per screen. http://bit.ly/R0H2s.
The only two other films to do this were BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and DREAMGIRLS. Why is this? Does this... show an unfulfilled desire to watch intelligent, unique films as opposed to formulated, predictable stories that fit into a single genre? Do you think it would have averaged less per screen if it had opened everywhere nation-wide? Do people want to just find a way to occupy their time or be genuinely entertained?

It also helps that these 18 screens were divided amongst the big markets with audiences for these films, New York and LA. There's a reason why a city like Orlando doesn't get an indie like this for weeks after release, if not months. And when it goes wide (2000 screens TOPS), the per average will level out. The market for this type of very ... Read Morechallenging movie simply isn't that big. Well made, challenging and thought provoking movies are made all the time and are ignored by the masses (for the most part). I hope this movie does well and I look forward to seeing it. But I'd be very surprised if it turned into some world beater, no matter how much Oprah campaigns for it.

i'm with nancy...the masses follow the lead...this appears to be a lead if you ask me...call me stupid, or outrageous but in my opinion hype is powerful and this hype seems to support the masses...aka the less fortunate...if you care to care....follow a good lead regardless of where you live, it is a good thing to know others stories, enz gave us serious...they may just be precious and give us precious!

Susan Howard Tyree I always recommend the Enzian for date nights. Sometimes all you have time for these days is either dinner or a movie. Enzian lets you multi-task, and it's not your everyday blockbuster movie. I love it! My hubby and I go when we can!

Very exciting to see Tim Anderson and Steven Shea's short film 2:22, it feels like the Slam is the last on the festival list, but we finally get to see it.
