Earth Week event: Viewing of films “Buffalo Creek” & “Buffalo Creek Revisited”
Buffalo Creek is a documentary of life in a coal mining town in West Virginia where a sludge dam burst and flooded an elementary school. This film demonstrates the hidden costs of the coal industry to a community and the health and well being of persons living there. Ten years later, this community is revisited and the effects of corporate control, psychology of disaster and paradox of poor people living in a rich land are examined.

Earth Week Event: “Treasures of Pisgah,” National Forest Hike (weather permitting)
Did you know that you live within a half an hour of a global treasure? The Southern Appalachian woods are the most biologically diverse temperate forests on earth. Celebrate Earth Week with a field trip to the beautiful Pisgah National Forest, a national treasure trove right here in our back yard. Join Southern Appalachian biologist Alan Smith and forest historian Kathy Newfont in an exploration of Pisgah’s riches. Native Wildflowers, migratory song birds, and furtive salamanders await! Wear sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle. Transportation may be limited so contact Kathy Newfont at knewfont@mhc.edu to reserve a spot.

Earth Week Event: Tree plantings in Recreation Park
Lifework is having a tree planting during green week on Thursday, April 23rd from 1-4PM at the Mars Hill Recreation Park on Crooked Street. We are searching for 6-8 hardworking students to take part in the tree planting. Transportation will be provided for anyone interested in this great opportunity to help beautify our town, as well as the planet.
Be sure to wear your work clothes and plan to get dirty. Meet at LifeWorks at 1PM for transportation. Space is limited so let me know ASAP if you would like to participate!
