As an Avid Supporter of yours, I would encourage you to support the passage of the Health Care Bill. Opposition would be a grave disappointment among your supporters.

I want to know how Senator Landrieu feels about public employees who will need their Social Security. The GPO (HR 82) and WEP (H.R. 235) are Social Security provisions which impact individuals who have chosen to serve their school boards, towns, cities, counties and states in public jobs. These provisions reduce retired public employee's individual... Read More Social Security and survivor benefits. The Government Pension Offset (GPO) eliminates or reduces the spousal benefit by two-thirds the value of a teacher's retirement benefit. Is this one area of concern for you? Are you willing to fight for the public employees with as much zeal? Why haven't these bills made it out of the House Ways and Means Committee? Please help the teachers and other public employees to get their Social Security or spousal benefits.

We do need to look at what measures we use to judge teacher effectiveness. SATs are designed to produce a bell curve, and it inevitably reflects demographics. It's not fair for good teachers to work in poor schools and be punished for it by being paid less. If you think that the current accountability system was designed to help failing schools, ... Read Morethink again. Students in schools serving high-poverty populations score low on tests, and then those schools get less, instead of more, federal money. Then, the gap widens. If is is a Reading First school, it can get money to provide scripted reading instruction on basic skills, which is another way to "dumb down" the curriculum, because it does not allow teachers to address individual deficiencies at all. CRITICAL THINKING IS KEY. Key to good schools, key to good teachers, key to good leadership, key to good policies.
