Opening Reception: Friday, November 20, 5:00pm – 8:00pm (coincides with Medford’s Third Friday Art Walk)
Exhibit Dates: November 13 – ...December 24, 2009
(Medford, OR) – October 29, 2009 – With incredible vibrancy, Frank Rinna uses watercolors to capture spectacular overseas scenery and comforting images of home. In his new exhibit at the Rogue Gallery & Art Center, Rinna offers up “A Retrospective: 1990-2009” on display in the Main Gallery from November 13 through December 24. A celebratory Opening Reception will take place on Friday, November 20 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, at which the public can meet the artist and learn about his technique, his travels, and his love affair with the Rogue Valley. This exhibit is generously sponsored by Rogue Disposal & Recycling and Pronto Print—businesses who understand the importance of helping the Rogue Gallery present quality art exhibits for our community without charging a fee for admission.
Also opening in November is a collection of oil paintings produced in the 1950s by famed local artist Eugene Bennett. This exhibit, appearing on the Featured Artist Wall in the Gallery Shop, will be on display through January—the official 50th anniversary of the Rogue Gallery & Art Center, of which Bennett was a founding member.
FRANK RINNA – A Retrospective: 1990-2009
“I like to paint watercolors that take you somewhere, to a place you remember as a child, the home you were raised in, or a sailboat you once owned,” explains Rinna of his style of painting. And when you stare at his waters of Venice and the white stucco buildings in Greece and Portugal, you feel transported. Closer to home, he brings you the familiar buildings of Jacksonville and elsewhere in the Rogue Valley, along with true to life front porches that evoke lazy summer afternoons and make you want to step up and sit for a while.
“In college I was especially influenced by my watercolor instructor, Louis Miljareck, who advised me to pursue a career in watercolor painting because I had ‘a natural sense of color.’ I believe a painting should lift you and transport you. That’s what I strive for in a painting.”
Rinna graduated summa cum laude from the California College of Arts and Crafts. Upon graduation he went to work for The San Francisco Chronicle as a staff artist. After five inspirational years with the newspaper, he opened his own art service in San Francisco working with agencies on accounts for the Standard Oil Company, Chevron, PG&E, Pittsburg Paints, and the Harry & David Mail Order Company.
While working on the Harry & David account, he was offered the position of Executive Art Director. He accepted the offer and worked for them until 1988 when he retired to pursue his first love, watercolor painting. His paintings are in many private collections, and he is an award-winning member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon. More of his work is on display at the University Club and the lobby of Morgan Stanley/Smith Barney’s Medford branch.
EUGENE BENNETT – 1950s
Surprisingly, Eugene Bennett—long regarded as the foremost artist in Southern Oregon—first dreamed of becoming a musician. Born and raised in Central Point, he began to study music at the University of Oregon before joining the US Navy in 1943. During his three years of service he painted the landscapes wherever he was stationed, and when he returned home decided to pursue art instead of music. Bennett enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago in 1947, and while studying also taught art at New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL.
After returning to Oregon in the late 50s, Bennett became one of the four founding members of the Rogue Valley Art Association (now known as the Rogue Gallery & Art Center), intended to promote and support the arts in our region. Today this non-profit community art center offers area artists the opportunity to display their work and teach others. It’s only fitting, as the Rogue Gallery approaches its 50th year of service to the community that Eugene Bennett graces the Gallery Shop’s Featured Artist Wall. Some of his work—mainly oil paintings from the 1950s—will be displayed from November through January (January 20 being the official anniversary date of the organization).
Bennett’s work has been shown at the Brooklyn Museum, New York City’s famed Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art, and even as far away as Alba, Italy. Locally, his art has been displayed at the Schneider Museum of Art at Southern Oregon University and of course, at the Rogue Gallery. Bennett was a featured artist on the television show Oregon Art Beat in 2001. In 2002 Bennett was honored with the Governor's Arts Award for work that has "significantly contributed to the growth and development of Oregon's cultural life."
Mark your calendars for another festive Rogue Gallery & Art Center (RGAC) Opening Reception—Friday, November 20 from 5:00 to 8:00pm—which also coincides with Medford’s Third Friday Art Walk. Frank Rinna’s exhibit continues through December 24; and Eugene Bennett’s pieces will be up through January, 2010. For more information, contact RGAC at 541-772-8118 or visit www.roguegallery.org.

ARTIST STACIE SMITH PUTS HER BEST FACES FORWARD
AT THE ROGUE GALLERY & ART CENTER
Opening Reception: Friday, July 17, 5:00pm – 8:00pm (coincides with Medford’s Third Friday Art Walk)
Exhibit Dates: July 17 – August 15, 2009
(Medford, OR) – July 1, 2009 – It’s all about faces at Stacie Smith’s new exhibit, soon to be displa...yed at the Rogue Gallery & Art Center. Her collection of work is an equal mix of realism and mind’s eye frolic—spanning 40 years and including a wide range of media. Every one of them is of a human face, many of which are painted with “radiant” and metallic pigments. The exhibit opens on July 17 with a celebratory Opening Reception from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, at which the public can meet the artist.
“In 2002 I inherited a treasure trove of old family photos,” explains Smith. “These photos drew me in, and as I studied them, I felt a kind of longing to get know the people in them, which was impossible, because most of them had died long before I was born. It occurred to me that I could get to know these folks better by painting them!” Her Great Aunt Cora was the first of many such portraits derived from the old family photos. And as she looked back at her work over the years, one of the things she saw was that the human face has been a beloved motif in her work since her earliest years as a visual artist. Now, decades of faces come together in one time and space, at this unique exhibit.
Smith grew up in Eugene and is a life-long resident of the Pacific Northwest. She currently lives and works in South Beach, on Yaquina Bay. She completed three years at the University of Oregon as an English Literature major and then left to pursue a career as a visual artist. In addition to paintings in oil and water media, Smith is also known for her woodblock prints and sculptures in alabaster and aluminum. Her work has been widely shown in more than 50 galleries, museums, art centers, and festivals. She has exhibited all across the state of Oregon, and also in Washington. Her art graces the permanent collections of the Mt. Angel Abbey Library in Mt. Angel, Oregon; the Mario Pastega House at Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis, Oregon; and St. Rita’s Retreat Center in Gold Hill, Oregon.
Mark your calendars for another festive Rogue Gallery & Art Center Opening Reception—Friday, July 17 from 5:00 to 8:00pm—which also coincides with Medford’s Third Friday Art Walk. The exhibit continues at the Rogue Gallery & Art Center through August 15. For more information on this exhibit, contact RGAC at 541-772-8118 or visit www.roguegallery.org.

Exhibit Dates: June 5 – July 11, 2009
There is no subject that cannot be rendered in pastels—a medium that uses the same pigment as that found in oil paint. And that’s just what artists Mary Jo Heath and Anna Horrigan int...end to show in their shared exhibit, “Pastel Impressions – Two Artists,” on display at the Rogue Gallery. The exhibit opens to the public on June 5, but the big celebration occurs during the OPENING RECEPTION on Friday, June 19 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, where you can meet and mingle with the two talented artists.
Both award winning artists who paint exclusively with pastels, their works are in corporate and private collections in North America, Europe, and Asia. The two have admired each other’s talents for years, attending workshops together and forging a friendship through their mutual love of pastel. Their exhibit consists mainly of landscapes, many of them local; as well as cityscapes, still-life, and figures.
MARY JO HEATH was raised in the Rogue Valley and taught art in public schools for more than 30 years, primarily in the Central Point school system. She began working with pastels in 1994 and has won several awards from the Pastel Society of Oregon National and Membership Shows. “I have gained experience with a variety of art media during my time spent teaching art in public schools,” she shared. “Of all the media I have tried, pastel is the most immediate, the most expressive, and the most forgiving. The pastels become an extension of my hand as I try to interpret what I see and how I feel about a subject matter.”
ANNA HORRIGAN has drawn the things around her since she first picked up a pencil. Living near Boston, she was exposed at an early age to the wonders at the Museum of Fine Arts. Her first art experience was there, as a 12-year-old student sketching ancient Egyptian artifacts with her class. She began life drawing and painting with watercolors and oils in college, after which she had a short career designing greeting cards for Rustcraft, the first greeting card company in the country. In later years she discovered pastels, which she calls “a medium that I have tried to make my own.”
Painting in pastel for more than 30 years, Horrigan’s work has been judged and accepted into both National and International Exhibits, earning a number of awards. HORRIGAN explains her love of painting, “I love to capture the heat of a summer day, the cool shadow in a park, the grandeur of a mountain range, the tranquility in an elderly face. The more I am exposed to the world around me, the more I see, and the more I want to paint.”
HEATH finds similar inspiration: “It could be the light, the compositions or the challenge of something I have never painted before. Sometimes the subject matter becomes a vehicle for a more abstract expression. Whatever the inspiration, pastel says it best for me.” An added benefit to the medium is that pastel never fades or darkens.
Mark your calendars for this festive opening reception—Friday, June 19 from 5:00 to 8:00pm—which also coincides with Medford’s Third Friday Art Walk. “Pastel Impressions” opens to the public two weeks earlier on June 5 and continues at the Rogue Gallery & Art Center through July 11. For more information on this exhibit, contact them at 541-772-8118 or visit www.roguegallery.org.
