When news came last week about the closure of Kirkus Reviews, the 76-year-old book-reviewing publication that catered mostly to booksellers and librarians, a lot of people were pretty mean about it. I had no idea PW paid only $25 per review. These are indeed grim times for professional book reviewers - even our own L.A. Times seems to have abandoned them. There are, however, many well written, helpful customer book reviews at sites like goodreads.com and, given the state of the industry, I believe their influence will continue to grow.

Thanks for another great column, Meghan. I always look forward to them.
