Speaking as a Neighborhood Association president: if I had a nickel for every time somebody has come up to me and complained about crime, only to evaporate when asked to be a block captain for their street...well I'd be buying us lunch, anyway.
Neighborhood Watch is a most effective tool for cutting crime at the street level. A colleague writes, "... See MoreIf I don't call the police, my neighbors will." That's how neighborhoods get cleaned up; three, five, eight houses at a time.
I am captain for 16 houses. We have a potluck cookout once or twice a year to update our contact info. We let each other know when we're going to be out of town. It's not hard work, it's fun, and we are protecting each others' safety and property. Go Myron!
