Studies Show Most of Your Lifespan Is Determined by Your Behavior, Not Your Genes; These Easy Steps Could Help Lengthen Lives
Michael Yarbrough
Michael Yarbrough
this is interesting... Longer lifespans are IIRC most strongly associated with people who are high in Conscientiousness (A construct on a personality inventory, part of the big five), which is similar to Judgment on the Myers-Briggs. These are the people who are careful enough to watch their health and who are considerate enough to do things like floss-- so flossing in itself will not lengthen your life, but being high in C surely will.

@Michael. An interesting idea. It's hard to know if we're seeing causation or correlation with the things the article talks about.

Hmm, check out the studies on people who lived a long time - a common thread is a minimum of food as children. Obviously starvation is not healthy. However you Do remind me of the Catholic mantra, "remember the starving children in Africa."

Methuselah Foundation "The goal isn’t just more years in your life, but more life in your years."- Glenn Harlan Reynolds on the reality of the Mprize approach to aging and the rich dividends that could be had from the success of healthy life extension.

Americans now live longer, healthier lives by several decades than the majority did a century ago. Most of us think it’s a good thing. Would extending this phenomenon by several more decades be good, too? Seems like it to Glenn Reynolds.

The Methuselah Foundation still supports Aubrey in his life extension work but we also wanted to take the opportunity to shine a spotlight on the hard-working scientists who are competing for the mprize.

Methuselah Foundation One of the strategies to extend healthy human life is to prevent or even preempt diseases such as cancer before they can take hold -- this article shows that Mfoundation's preemption strategy does indeed show great promise!

Data from screening led doctors to reconsider that the disease is bound only to grow worse.

I disagree that in the last century no progress has been made in understanding and treating cancer. True, we still don't have a panacea "cure" for it, but researches have grown to understand the complicated set of genetic changes that cause cancer, and survival rates for cancers have increased significantly.

It's easy to get discouraged with ... See Morecancer, since it's such an overwhelmingly powerful force; basically, you're trying to outwit billions of cells undergoing accelerated evolution, and that's not easy, but progress is being made.
