2009 will mark the 27th year for Jazz in July. Jazz in July brings diverse artists of different cultures, backgrounds, and age to the local metro area. Thanks to our members and donations we have been able to keep Metro Arts Jazz in July.

Metro Arts Jazz in July The Village of Ponderosa will host the finale
concert for the Metro Arts 2009 Jazz in July music
series. The popular Kansas City-based blues and
jazz band, Four Fried Chickens & A Coke will
perform on Saturday, August 1st at 7:30 pm.

Concert goers can experience the Village of
Ponderosa’s be...autiful Lakeside Terrace where
music lovers can enjoy great blues as well as
delicious food from Gateway Market and beer
and wine from select premium vendors that will
be available for purchase from tented booths.

To celebrate the end of the summer jazz festival,
a Metro Arts Alliance fundraising patron party
will take place at Gateway Market at 5:30.

Metro Arts Jazz in July DES MOINES, IA – On July 28 the Jazz in July finds a new site host in the Oakridge Neighborhood. At 5 PM, the neighborhood plays host to Mel Hrubetz’s Giants of Jazz presentation on Bix Beiderbecke and Harry James.

This concert offers the music of both men and educational information on their lives. Harry James is know...n as one of the most outstanding instrumentalists of swing, and Bix Beiderbecke has a strong Iowa tie: he was born in raised in Davenport, where there is now an annual jazz festival in his honor.

Metro Arts Jazz in July DES MOINES, IA – On July 26, Jazz in July brings a totally new line-up to its season. Union Park Neighborhood Association takes its first turn as a host site for the 27 year old concert series. The Jason Danielson Trio makes their first appearance at Jazz in July, kicking off the night at 5 PM.

Jazz in July only adds a... handful of new sites and new musicians each year, making this evening a unique convergence of a fresh site and a new musical act.

Metro Arts Jazz in July WAUKEE, IA – On July 23 the Waukee Area Arts Council plans a well-rounded downtown festival featuring the music of The Jazz Page, led by Waukee native Wayne Page.

The festivities kick off at 6 PM with a preview performance from the summer theatre group, a green celebration from the Waukee High School and Prairieview Ea...rth Clubs, art activities for children and food vendors. The Jazz Page performs at 7 PM.

Metro Arts Jazz in July DES MOINES, IA – On July 22, Gray’s Lake makes its first appearance as a Jazz in July site in the 27 years of the event. The evening features artists, food and activities as a background to the two performances of the evening.

Dave Rezek’s Alpha State Agents begin the night at 5:30 with cool modern jazz. Following up a...t 7:30, Jazz in July favorite The Peoples Connection performs a Giants of Jazz concert featuring the music of Grover Washington, Jr.

Metro Arts Jazz in July DES MOINES, IA – The Roosevelt Cultural District returns to Jazz in July with its biggest show yet on July 21 at the Shops at Roosevelt. At 6 PM Classic Jazz featuring Judi Ann Brown gives a Giants of Jazz performance featuring the music of the beloved Gershwin Brothers. At 8 PM Ed East brings his solo show to Des Moin...es, amplifying the music with looping melodies and rhythms.

In between performances, the Isiserettes will entertain the audience with their invigorating dance and drums. Artists and food vendors will also add to the atmosphere of the evening, in addition to temporary tattoos, art activities for kids, hair fun by Halo salon, and picnic food by Le Jardin.

Metro Arts Jazz in July URBANDALE, IA – Living History Farms teams up with Jazz in July for the free July 16 show. This double header concert is the only Behind the Barn installment of the summer to have free admission. In addition to music, the night features dancing, games, BBQ and a cash bar.

Metro Arts Jazz in July DES MOINES, IA – Central Des Moines neighborhood Chautauqua Park is the lucky host of Cityview “Best Local Band” runners-up One Nite Stand on July 17 at 6 PM. For three years running, this group has been one of Des Moines’ top picks.

Fans of rock and funk will find this Jazz in July event to their liking. One Nite Stan...d saxophonist Tommy Doggett may get around more than many of his fellow musicians: When not playing with One Nite Stand, he accompanies Cory Taylor’s newest project, Junk Beer Kidnap Band. Doggett has also been seen playing with Roxi Copland and Cleo’s Apartment.

One Nite Stand will play on the lawn of the Casady School at 1801 16th Street in the Chautauqua neighborhood.

Metro Arts Jazz in July DES MOINES, IA – Gabriel Espinosa, director of Iowa’s Ashanti Latin Jazz, is making his July 15 Jazz in July appearance a special evening: it is the release party for his Zoho Records CD titled “From Yucatan to Rio”.

Reviewer Susan Francis describes the CD: “From Yucatan To Rio makes Latin-jazz the star of the show and... takes his band across the romantic landscapes of bossa nova’s glades.”

The evening of Latin Jazz begins at 5 PM at Heartland Presbyterian Church in Clive with a performance by Brazilian Sunset featuring the music of Stan Getz. Ashanti Latin Jazz takes the stage at 7 PM. Copies of “From Yucatan to Rio” will be available, and the evening will also feature food and artwork from South America.

At 7:30, avant-garde musician and Iowa State U...niversity professor Michael Giles leads his band The 3x5 in their original compositions of cool jazz.

Metro Arts Jazz in July DES MOINES, IA – Klesmer music meets latin jazz in Beaverdale Park on July 18. The evening begins with the lively sounds of the Java Jews at 6 PM. At 8 PM Jazz in July newbies Los Saltinos take the stage. Both bands feature jazz favorites with their own stylish twist.

This concert is also a chance for rock fans to catch... a familiar musician. Dirty Little Rabbits’ keyboardist Mike Pfaff plays vibraphone in the Los Saltinos line up.

Wellman is a familiar with the neighborhood: he graduated in May of ’09 from Roosevelt High School. Still, the evening will be exciting for him: Waveland Park regularly draws over 1,000 listeners to its Jazz in July event.

The event gets a freshening up in another way: after being hosted on the Roosevelt lawn for eleven years, the neighborhood concert is now moving to the Drake Observatory lawn. The concert begins at 7 PM.

Metro Arts Jazz in July DES MOINES, IA – The Scott Davis Quartet and Friends bring Miles Davis’ music to life in a Giants of Jazz concert on July 10 at the Sylvan Theater in Greenwood Park.

The Giants of Jazz series highlights influential musicians from the history of the genre with performances of their music peppered by brief biographical i...nterludes. Davis has been described as a “jazz superstar” and “one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century”. He was responsible for the helping to develop many aspects of Jazz after World War II.

In addition to the free music, artists and food vendors will be on hand to complete the evening.
