The Missouri Military Academy Colonels swept their
season series against Southern Boone County in the District 1, Class 4 soccer
finals on Thursday in Ashland.
The Colonels pulled away from a scoreless first half to
post a 2-1 win.
The teams seemed to be equally match in the first half,
with neither able to score and the... battle waged between the
boxes.
Senior midfielder Sung Chan (Daniel) Lee passed to
senior left forward Juan Pablo De Esesarte who headed the ball into the goal to
put the Colonels in the lead, 1-0, about 10 minutes into the second half. SoBoCo
tied the game, and it remained so until six minutes were left, when senior right
forward Eduardo Benites headed a ball coming from De Esesarte directly into the
goal for the decisive score. A last-second goal by De Esesarte was waived
off.
“I’m very proud of the effort and determination of our
players,” said Capt. Syed. “The whole team stayed aggressive and refused to give
in.”
The Colonels of head coach Capt. Ali Syed improved to
11-5-1 on the season and 6-1 against district opposition with their second 2-1
win of the season over top-seeded Southern Boone. It was the fourth district
title in the last five years for the defending
champs.
MMA faces Whitfield next Thursday in the state

Goal scorers for the Colonels were senior defender
Thomas Williams and senior left wing Sung Chan (Daniel) Lee.
Williams scored on a long, looping shot from outside the
box off a ...short pass from senior midfielder Gabriel Villasenor at 33:50 of the first half. Lee took a crossing pass from senior right forward Eduardo Benites and made it 2-0 with a shot into the corner of the net at the 23:40 mark, and the Colonels held that lead through
intermission.
“We did just enough in this game to secure a win. We had a lot of sick players, but the guys stepped up big-time and played relentlessly under tough conditions,” said MMA head coach Capt. Ali Syed.
“We scored two early goals in the first half, and that was enough for us to beat a very good Southern Boone team. Our team has been playing with a lot of confidence and we are undefeated so far this month.”
The 7-5-1 Colonels host Smithton at 5 p.m. Thursday in
another district contest.

Two retired longtime coaches at Missouri Military Academy were inducted into the MMA
Athletics Hall of Fame during halftime ceremonies at Saturday’s Homecoming football victory. Lt. Col. Ron Rosendahl and Maj. Richard Twells served MMA for
a combined 53 years as coaches, teachers and
mentors.
Lt. Col. Rosendahl served f...or 31 years as a biology
teacher and head swimming coach, 20 years as head baseball coach, 10 years as
Athletics Director and five years as an assistant football coach.
During his tenure as swim coach, he led MMA to more than
100 victories in dual meets. His 1983 team was undefeated and has been inducted
into the Hall of Fame.
He also had more than 100 baseball victories. One of his
players, Alumni Association President Dean Ahlstrand, Class of 1982, pitched in
the Houston Astros’ minor leagues system and is a member of the Hall of
Fame.
Lt. Col. Rosendahl also established and served as
Scoutmaster of MMA Boy Scout Troop 39 for eight
years.
Maj. Twells served for 22 years as an English teacher,
20 years as head wrestling coach and 13 years as head soccer coach.
As wrestling coach, Maj. Twells led his teams to more
than 100 dual meet victories, developed 50 state qualifiers, won a district
championship and had several second-place teams. Jary Dawson, one of his
wrestlers, placed second in the state as a heavyweight and is a current member
of the Athletics Hall of Fame.
As soccer coach, he led his teams to more than 120
victories, one state final four and two district titles. In 1999, he led the
Colonels to an undefeated regular season. One of his players, Tomas Gonzalez,
and his 1992 team are members of the Hall of Fame.

Academy in a rematch Wednesday, falling 113 – 56.
“We left encouraged because
this score was significantly better than in our first meeting,” said MMA head
coach Capt. Richards Boyce.
Outstanding performances of
the day for t...he Colonels were turned in by Xin Rui Zhao and Todd Minnett. Zhao
had two first-place finishes, winning the 200-meter individual medley in 2:42:09
and the 100-meter breast stroke in 1:11:63.
Minnett had second-place
finishes in the 200-meter freestyle 2:27:9) and the 500-meter freestyle
(6:47:22).
“The team, as a whole, had
many more third-place finishes than in our first meet, too,” said Capt.

Next meet for the Colonels

MMA won this past Saturday 26-6 beating Wentworth Military Academy for the third year in a row. "This was the best game by far that we have played all year," says Head Coach CPT Brian Maher. He continues,"We prepared very well this last week and I feel that it showed up during the game. I am very proud of our effort...s the entire game." Scoring for the Colonels was Derek Kantorski, rushing for 2 TDs and throwing for 2 more, Luis Gonzalez was on the receiving end of the two TD passesl. "Defensively we played our best game all year we forced 3 turnovers 1 interception, 2 fumbles and only holding Wentworth to 6 points. Overall it was a great weekend for MMA we were able to get our first win and we need to use this momentum into this weekend's homecoming match-up against Metro East Lutheran on Colonels Field starting at 2:30 on Saturday," concludes CPT Maher.

Missouri Military Academy is the first school in Missouri to run on solar power, and it's doing that at its building Barnard Hall. A computer system runs the whole building from light sensors to temperature and moisture.
