HUMANS & HYBRIDS
By: Rebecca Brantley

"... Despite the variety of work, the centerpiece of the show is Miami artist Christina Pettersson’s
oversize “We Are No Longer in the Land of Kings.” Unabashedly feminist
in its stance, Pettersson’s image is of a tall, lithe woman clasping
the hilt of a ...sword that has the decapitated head of a man hanging from
its blade. Disconcertingly, the sharp, bloodied sword looks as if it’s
slicing through the woman’s shoulder as well, and like the countless
baroque “Judith and Holofernes” paintings upon which this painting is
predicated, one must wonder if such a sexualizing, castrating image of
a female is empowering or, like the sullied blade that she wields,
mutually destructive. But such concerns are not at the heart of “The
Figure in Form.” Instead, Pettersson’s larger-than-life, virtuosically
rendered drawing highlights the central role the human form plays in
contemporary art. Accompanying Pettersson’s “We Are No Longer in the
Land of Kings” is an 18-minute film that reveals a similar aesthetic,
though it lacks the dramatic impact of her drawing... "

SPINELLO GALLERY FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

LITTLEST SISTER 09 : IGNITES THE ART FAIR FURY AT SPINELLO

Miami, FL, NOVEMBER 11th, 2009 - If Friday night at Spinello Gallery was any indicator on what to expect this year at Art Basel Miami Beach, you better get your rain boots, umbrella, and water proof fanny pack to keep your money dry. One ...month prior to Art Basel Miami Beach and all the Basel Spawns, LITTLEST SISTER 09, the smallest art fair in town, opened up to an extravagantly large crowd pouring outside of Spinello Gallery and onto the streets of the Design District.

Design District maverick, Craig Robins (CEO & President, Dacra) was the first collector to stroll down the three aisle, eight booth encapsulated art fair. Robins shared, "Littlest Sister 09 is one of the most interesting shows of national caliber art with locally based artists that I have seen in a long time. The familiarity of the art fair style layout for the show adds an interesting dynamic somehow making the art even more engaging."

Donnamarie Baptiste (Art Basel Miami Beach Event Production Manager), nabbed a Manny Prieres drawing. She exclaimed "I think Littlest Sister is brilliant!" Local collectors such as Paul and Joe Berg, Dawn Fine, Jorge Rosso, Stephen Lanster, and Dan & Kathryn Mikesell were seen eyeing up the hot roster of the 50+ invited artists.

Littlest Sister 09 has an array of works ranging from Miami's seasoned and highly respected Pablo Cano to New World School of The Arts recent graduate Tatiana Vahan who's "Untitled" (Mondays), a culmination of 20 Florida drivers licenses in which Vahan regularly updated and collected from her Monday excursions to the D.M.V. garnered much attention and quickly found a home at the Miksell's collection.

Bill Bilowit (Director, Wet Heat Project) explained, "What I thought I would see at Littlest Sister was an ironic simulacrum of the super-sized markets of Art Basel Miami Beach week. What I found was a purposeful emulation of the best aspects of a major fair on a relaxing and intimate scale. I saw thoughtful curating, dynamic grouping and strategic pricing that provided for every level of collector, from shy first-timer to cognoscenti to Mover & Shaper."

Littlest Sister 09 hosted by the Spinello Gallery (155 NE 38th St., No. 101, Miami, FL - 33137) will be having a Design District Gallery Walk preview reception on November 14th, 7-10PM.

November 6 - December 10, 2009

LITTLEST SISTER 09 is a fragment of the explosive satellite art fair phenomena; exploring the "booth" as a venue to exhibit and sell art. Since 2002, every December the glamorous art typhoon - Art Basel Miami Beach, takes place in sunny Miami, Florida. The international art show takes place in Miami Beach. It is the American sister event of Art Basel in Switzerland, the most important annual art show worldwide for the past 39 years. 7 years later, the effects of Art Basel Miami Beach spawned 20+ "satellite" art fairs throughout Miami, housing 1100+ galleries and alternative spaces from around the world.
