Michael Josephson They say, sticks and stones will break your bones but names will never harm you.” That’s nonsense. Every day, mean or careless statements cause lasting harm. Be careful what you say.

Michael Josephson Beginning of football season LaGarret Blount suspended supposedly for season for sucker punching opponent but he practiced with team and was just reinstated by UofOr in time for bowl games. UofFl Brandon Spikes caught trying to gouge eye of opponent suspended for 1 game. UofNM soccer player Liz Lambert suspended indefinitely for massive dirty play. When will she be reinstated? Should coaches be held accountable?

LaGarrett's sucker punch was nothing but pure childishness. He should have been banned from the league- if he decided to make it a fair fight by letting the guy know he was coming- thats one thing. But he could have easily broken a mans jaw with a cowardly punch like that. Liz Lambert should have been red-carded with the first flagrant punch to the... Read More back. Another coward who doesn't believe in a fair fight. Then banned from the league with the hair pulling. Where is the line drawn? When someone gets fatally injured?

Why does this only make me feel guilty for something I don't think I've done, if I even knew what it was that I didn't do?

I saw a little zipper purse for sale the other day. The design looked like the "Sorry, we're closed" sign. But it read, "Sorry, we're sorry." Classic. One of the things that drives me crazy is when people say I'm sorry these days. No. They're not. They've simply learned that their self-serving actions require the "I'm sorry" statement. Once, I ... Read Morecalled someone on it. She just blinked at me as if to say, "Well! I said I'm sorry. What more do you want?" "I'm sorry" has topped my list, above an old favorite -- "Not perfect. Just saved." An excuse for doing anything one wants to do. Sigh.

Michael Josephson Horrible, horrible, horrible about the killings at Fort Hood. Ft. Hood was the first military installation to adopt CC! for all youth dependent programs (now its in 140 Army garrisons all over the world). I hope this will help getting some of the folks thru this ordeal.

Michael Josephson Friedrich Nietzsche said, "Necessity is not a fact, it's an interpretation." Very few things are really necessary. This is very helpful to combat the self-delusion that we need something because we want it.

Michael Josephson I'm really against cheating but this Tennessee prof went way too far. What do you think? Students given choice to admit cheating or risk "hell" http://www.tennessean.com/article/D4/20091104/NEWS01/911040324/Students+given+choice+to+admit+cheating+or+risk+

Students in MTSU management professor Thomas Li-Ping Tang's graduate level class were asked last week to sign a pledge that they had not cheated during a recent exam.

Many colleges have students include a statement on papers and finals to that effect (sans the hell part). Whether serious or not I think the prof had the right idea.

I support certification that no help was given or received at time of test. I have big problem with threat of Hell and post cheating confession.

Michael Josephson We judge ourselves by our best intentions, most noble ideas and our most courageous deeds but we are judged by our last worst act. Whether that's fair or not is beside the point. The point is: don't do anything your not willing to be remembered for.

Michael Josephson I want to write a commentary on compromise. The ability to break a stalemate of inaction through honest give and take used to be considered a great skill and virtue. Now, it seems, the word always is used to suggest moral weakness. I'd like your ideas as a formulate mine.

I'm not sure this is truly compromise, but it does make compromise more pragmatic - the ability to set aside lesser values in order to achieve agreement on the greater value.

Patricia Shanks I bought one of the little Character Counts lunchbags at Ralph's today. I hope your wonderful materials reach the people who need to see them. I also will pick up a couple of the publications and place them strategically in my studio lobby. Great idea! I hope it works well for you.
