Michael Reder, Bass An interesting article in the NY Times....Quite a hot topic after the Metropolitan Opera's new production of Tosca opened to "boos" recently. I believe that even these pillars of the repertory need to be reexamined to remain vital.

An opera score is not a sacred text. Directors should claim the freedom to reinterpret a work.

Michael Reder, Bass The first truly large-scale masterpiece of Western music, Claudio Monteverdi’s monumental 1610 Vespers stands at the junction between Renaissance restraint and Baroque splendor. Sacred music but also high theatre, the dances and virtuosic vocal concerti, alternating with music in the ‘old style’, are performed with one... singer per part accompanied by cornets, sackbuts, recorders, organs and strings.

Old World Spanish harmony is peppered with provocative rhythms of Latin Americas indigenous peoples – a unique New World hybrid – performed by EM/NY’s superb vocal ensemble and a plethora of plucked guitars, arch-lutes, harp and a bevy of bowed strings.
Sacred vocal creations for Spain’s and Mexico’s ornate cathedrals ...are interspersed with instrumental and vocal chanzonetas, villancicos, coloquios and ensaladas, with guitar tablatures by Santiago de Murcia. Villancico texts feature poetry by the Mexican nun, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, set to music by native Mexican composers. Rhythmically vivacious villancicos are a cross between secular and sacred in the Hispanic American tradition of interpolating popular songs in liturgical services.
