Today, the Detroit News ran an article by the Advocate, about how the preferential treatment received by the auto insurance industry has made rates unaffordable, forces one-third of all motorists in the state to drive uninsured, and why the State Legislature needs to take up the mantle of reform right away!

Preferential treatment: That's what the law gives Michigan auto insurance companies at the expense of consumers and the state's auto economy, which employs 24 percent of Michigan residents. Unaffordable auto insurance prevents new car purchases.

Not only do insurance companies use credit scoring as a way to establish premium ratings, but, too, when you're denied payment for a legitimate claim, and your financial resources are eventually depleted, you end up being a "credit casualty" of those same insurance companies. That is, their denials result in your credit score plummeting. I know of what I speak. Keep on keepin' on!

Michigan Automobile and Home Insurance Consumer Advocate Fantastic editorial by the Grand Rapids Press Editorial Board, concluding that the use of credit scores to set auto insurance rates should be prohibited.http://www.mlive.com/opinion/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2009/10/editorial_the_right_factors_dr.html

Insurance rates for drivers should reflect how they handle their cars, not their credit cards. Yet auto insurance companies in Michigan want to use credit scores as one factor in determining how much to charge consumers.

Preferential Treatment. That's what the law gives insurers: We must buy their product, even when unaffordable. They're exempt from the state Consumer Protection Act. They have a blank check to raise rates at will. They're exempt from the U.S. antitrust laws. Congress is now taking a hard look at reform. The Michigan Le...gislature should too. It isn't fair.http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2007-03-07-insurance_N.htmRead More

Excellent Editorial in today's Detroit Free Press "Restoring Judicial Restraint." The article talks about how, in the recent past, the Michigan Supreme Court has had "obsequeous deference to insurance companies and other deep-pocket defendants." On October 7, the Michigan Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case involving whether the state can prohibit insurance companies from using your credit score to determine your rate. Unfair credit scoring should be banned by the Supreme Court and by the State Legislature. A consumer's level of education, occup...ation, and record of paying household bills has nothing to do with how you drive.http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/columnist/block/2007-06-11-ym-credit-car_N.htmRead More

National studies show that despite a steady decrease in claims submitted, auto insurance companies are raking in record profits. Here in Michigan, serious car accidents are down 54% since 1996 (9,000 fewer accidents), and yet our rates and industry profits rise. This Office will present a reform package to the State Le...gislature, for passage this session, to restore fairness and accountability to the dysfunctional No Fault system.http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/30/nyregion/30insure.html?_r=2&oref=slogin&oref=sloginRead More

Steve, thanks. The insurance industry has had Lansing in a headlock for over 30 years. It's time to reform the system to make rates more affordable for consumers, and make the industry more accountable. I'm optimistic we'll get a good reform bill the Governor can sign, this year.
