This should really come as no surprise to anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of thermal dynamics. Cold air falls. Insulation keeps warm/cold in/out. To keep a side-by-side freezer compartment uniformly cold from top to bottom, means defying the forces that cause colder air to sink. In a side-by-side configuration, the freezer ... See Morecompartment is also exposed to the greatest possible amount of sidewall thermal loss/gain.

It's no surprise that keeping a less-exposed compartment, that lacks the thermal challenges of a tall vertical column, cold, takes less energy. My guess is that the natural laws that cause colder air to move downward, would make a freezer at the bottom the most efficient of all.

"A great solution doesn't have to be complicated."

Microsoft Hohm Tip of the day - Use retained heat. Turn off cook tops or ovens a few minutes before food has completed cooking. Retained heat finishes the job using less energy.

Microsoft Hohm Tip of the day! Avoid using the “rinse hold” on your dishwasher for just a few soiled dishes. It uses 3 to 7 gallons of hot water each time you use it.

Microsoft Hohm Tip of the day! use your ceiling fan all year long - In the winter, reverse the motor and operate the ceiling fan at low speed in the clockwise direction. This produces a gentle updraft, which forces warm air near the ceiling down into the occupied space.

Stephen: Correct, if your insulation is crap, the hot air sitting at the ceiling would just drift up. But by using the fan, you cause it to circulate again, so it has a chance of warming the room before it gets absorbed upward.

Microsoft Hohm Tip of the Day - There is a common misconception that screen savers reduce energy use by monitors; they do not. Automatic switching to sleep mode or manually turning monitors off is always the better energy-saving strategy.

Microsoft Hohm Tip of the day! Although compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) usually cost a bit more than incandescent bulbs initially, over their lifetime they are cheaper because of how little electricity they use. Ask your utility company if they provide rebates or other incentives.

LED maybe, but I did some calculations a while ago that indicate the lumens/Watt for some specific LEDs is less than CFL (may have changed now). So that was a concern. But in my city and hopefully yours, we are required to take CFLs to e-waste recycling centers. They are prohibited from being sent to landfills. From a cost, lumens/Watt and bulb... See More life standpoint they are superior to incandescent.

With the long life of LEDs, they make a lot of sense in applications where the bulbs are hard to change too.

Sorry for the delayed response. I do think LED offers the best solution going forward. Greener technologies are all more expensive up front but LED's are I believe a better alternative. For home use, people should try both alternatives in specific applications. LED's for instance make a big impact as spot lights and ceiling lights. ... See MoreApplications that now use very heat intensive bulbs.

Thank you for contributing, this is an important topic because it's one of the major ways the general public is getting involved in green alternatives and hopefully leads to more interests in other areas like pesticide alternatives etc.

MW: Warm walls only make warm rooms if the walls are insulated, otherwise the heat blowing onto the walls from the registers will move to the outside and you get little benefit inside. Most homes with forced air registers will benefit from reflectors to direct the air inside the room.
