While I am not in favor of rate hikes, I must side with the insurance companies, for this reason: prices, in an unfettered market, are an effective tool for communicating between would-be buyers and sellers. If no one buys the product, the producers will have to lower costs to lower prices to entice buyers. So, the compnay becomes more efficient, ... Read Moreand buyers are happy. However, when there are limitations (such as spending money and man-hours to comply with government regulations as no doubt plague the insurance industry) or intereferences in the process, life gets more complicated. Prices no longer are the best way to determine market actions, and eventually something else will take its place as a way for the players in the market to choose who gets what. At that poinn, it may be things like age, gender, future expectations, or any number of other factors. So, I say, let the prices go up. If a whole lot of people drop their insurance due to cost, then there will be a huge potential market, if some other insurance company can come in and offer them what they want at a lower price. In the end everyone wins, and the government does not need to prop up a failing business anymore.

It's like Grover Norquist's prediction... only I didn't think he meant for us to be included... in self-destruction of big spenders by fighting over a shrinking pie.

Instead of fighting over management style, let's fight over principles. No more deck chairs to rearrange... we're drowning out here.
