Baryshnikov Arts Center 450 W. 37th Street New York, NY 10018 646 731 3200 The Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) opened its doors in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen in November 2005. BAC serves as a creative laboratory, meeting place, and performance space for a vibrant community of artists from around the world. BAC is ...also dedicated to building audiences for the arts by presenting contemporary, innovative work at low or no cost to ticket buyers. In 2008, the organization purchased a 299-seat theater within the performing arts complex, which is currently under renovation and will be transformed into the state of the art Jerome Robbins Theater. Scheduled to open in 2010, the theater will serve as an organic extension of the existing center, featuring multi-disciplinary work, emerging talent, and international artists, and including artist-centered activity that fosters creative exploration.

Mikhail Baryshnikov Catalan Days

Catalan Days is a multidisciplinary festival in New York City featuring leading artists from Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. Produced by the Institut Ramon Llull, the festival includes dance, film, literature, classical, jazz and electronic music, plus world famous Catalan cuisine, and is held in partne...rship with the Baryshnikov Arts Center, Jazz Standard, Lincoln Center’s Film Society, PEN American Center World Voices, Carnegie Hall, and the CUNY Graduate Center.

May 2 (Sat) at 8:00PM - THEATER
The Time of the Doves (La plaça del Diamant) by Mercè Rodoreda
Performed by Jessica Lange
Directed by Joan Ollé

The Time of the Doves is the most acclaimed novel by Mercè Rodoreda (1908-1983), one of Catalonia’s most beloved authors. Joan Ollé’s theatrical adaptation of The Time of the Doves tells the story of Natàlia, a young woman who comes into her own during the tempestuous years of Spain’s Second Republic.

May 3 (Sun) at 8:00PM - MUSIC
Carles Santos, piano
No al No

Carles Santos’s influences range from Miró, Brossa and the avant-garde, making him a difficult artist to classify in today’s art world. In No al No, he does what he does best: incorporates several musical languages into his own personal performance style. On this occasion, he honors the same American avant-garde with whom he worked in the 1970’s that he rejected when he embarked his musical path three decades ago.
May 4 (Mon) - CATALAN FOOD AND DRAMA
Directed by Carlota Subirós
Readings of Catalan Plays (in English)

American actors will read three powerful texts illustrating the intensity and quality of new Catalan drama. A free sampling of Catalan food, catered by Mercat restaurant, will be offered between the readings.

May 4 (Mon) at 5:00PM: It’s Raining in Barcelona
(Plou a Barcelona) by Pau Miró

A museum. A prostitute, her pimp, and a client. Three humans trapped in a dark web, hidden from view. Born in Barcelona in 1974, actor, playwright, and director Pau Miró is one of Catalonia’s up-and-coming theatrical talents, committed to bringing real life to the stage. Performed/read by Tory Vazquez, Greg Keller, David Wilson Barnes.

May 4 (Mon) at 7:00PM: The Grönholm Method
(El mètode Grönholm) by Jordi Galcerán

Three men and one woman are on their own in a room…or so they think. Someone is watching all of their movements, listening to all of their words. This is the story of four people clamoring for the same job with a company that does not mind breaking ethical barriers in order to hire the best candidate. Ironic and incisive, El mètode Grönholm is a comedy with a twist, and has been greeted enthusiastically by Catalan audiences. Performed/read by Tory Vazquez, Greg Keller, David Wilson Barnes, and Damian Young.

May 4 (Mon) at 9:00PM: Après moi, le déluge by Lluïsa Cunillé

In a hotel room in Kinshasa, an old woman tries to sell her son to a European businessman. In the poignant atmosphere created by the mother, the child, the businessman, and the white woman acting as an interpreter, Cunillé creates a powerful, sensitive account of Africa’s pain, and of the relationship between the First and the Third World. Performed/read by Kate Valk and Denis O’Hare.

May 5 (Tue) at 8:00PM - DANCE
Cia. Sònia Gómez
My Mother and I (Mi madre y yo)

Sònia Gómez’s choreography is characterized by boldness, honesty, and a willingness to share her personal experiences with the audience. In My Mother and I, she incorporates text and movement, sharing the stage with her mother to portray a difficult, hostile, yet intimate relationship between daughter and mother. Performed by Rosa Vicente and Sònia Gómez.

May 6 (Wed) at 8:00PM - DANCE
Societat Doctor Alonso
Volume II (Volum II)

Societat Doctor Alonso irreverently mixes genres and styles to find its own way to occupy the stage. Volume II takes place on an empty dance floor: a dancer is lost in her own world and ignores everything around her, including the music being played by a very peculiar DJ. Together, dancer Sofía Asencio and improvisational musician Nilo Gallego create a surprising show, packed with contagious energy. Conceived and choreographed by Sofía Asencio and Tomàs Aragay, founders/directors of Societat Doctor Alonso.

May 7 (Thu) at 8:00PM - DANCE
Mal Pelo
Bach

María Muñoz, together with Pep Ramis, is the co-founder of Mal Pelo, a creative group that has developed its own artistic language via movement and theatrical explorations. In this solo set to The Well-Tempered Clavier, Muñoz transposes Bach’s musical harmonies into physical movements that combine subtletly and precision, freedom and rigor.

May 8 (Fri) at 8:00PM - DANCE
Àngels Margarit/Cia. Mudances
Solo for Pleasure Only (Solo por Placer)

Àngels Margarit, a member of the first generation of contemporary dancers who came out of the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona in the 1970s, founded her own company in 1985. Intimate, pensive, and evocative, this solo—choreographed and performed by Margarit herself—explores the tension inherent in the act of creating a work of art. Margarit brings a powerful, almost feline grace to this simple, yet hypnotic dance, which unfolds to the sounds of ancient Arabic themes.

May 12 (Tue), 8:00PM – 1:00AM – MUSIC/MEDIA
SonarSound NY
With Marcel·lí Antunez, ReacTable, d.a.r.y.l., Del Palo Soundsystem: Griffi + Dj2D2 featuring Aqeel, Fibla + Árbol, Balago, Hidrogenesse, DJ/Rupture and Prefuse 73

Barcelona’s annual Sonar festival is a premiere destination on the international electronic dance music scene. Making its first U.S. appearance as part of Catalan Days, SonarSoundNY takes over the Baryshnikov Arts Center with multimedia art: installations, performances, and electronic, hip hop and alternative dance music by some of the most influential talents from New York, Catalonia, and the Balearic Islands.
