From the back alleys of the old North Side to the rooftop courts and “cage” gyms at downtown settlement houses, sports won the early allegiance of American Jewish Youth – often to the chagrin of rabbis and traditional Jewish families. In celebration of the Minneapolis JCC’s 50th year, Jeffrey Gurock, American Jewish H...istorian and academic advisor to the film documentary “First Basket” will address how the JCC movement has attempted to navigate the conflicts between athleticism and faith.

Dr. Gurock is the Libby M. Klaperman Professor of Jewish History at Yeshiva University. He is the author or editor of fourteen books. His works include, A MODERN HERETIC AND A TRADITIONAL COMMUNITY:MORDECAI M. KAPLAN, ORTHODOXY AND AMERICAN. Gurock served from 1982-2002 as associate editor of AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORY. He is also a former chair of the Academic Council of the American Jewish Historical Society. Gurock's latest book, JUDAISM'S ENCOUNTER WITH AMERICAN SPORTS was published in 2005 by Indiana University Press.

All talks are open to the public and will take place at the Sabes Jewish Community Center, 4330 South Cedar Lake Road, Minneapolis.
