The Phipps Dance Company
CADE HOLMSETH premieres Just One More. Money. Sometimes the master, sometimes the slave. We all have to deal with the repercussions of money related issues daily, or even many times in a day. It's a hot topic in the media because of the economic downturn, and in hard times people tend to band together against their oppressors. In this case, an invisible force we have created against ourselves. Just One More is a piece dedicated to exploring this topic and its many facets. Using an approach that, sometimes literal and sometimes satire, is aimed at creating an emotional and vicariously physical connection to the character(s) onstage. Step into the world of money and join our heroes for laughs, cringes, and wordplay.
Jennifer Glaws of JAGGED MOVES will be presenting two dance pieces at the December Kinetic Kitchen. Both works proving physical alertness and spatial tension, with movement content focusing on one's own perception of living with either visual or physical impairments. Loosing... finding sight, a quartet, explores blindness and the present state and celebration of the sense of touch. The second work, Strung along by my bones is a musically driven, jointed contemporary composition created and driven by the idea of an individuals teetering journey along a short narrow path of recovery. Jagged Moves performers include: Natalie Bucey, Jennifer Glaws, Carrie Lande Homuth, Choulette Navarro, Hai Dang Nguyen and Kristin Ostebee.
KiNETiC EVOLUTiONS is excited to introduce new company members: Megan Bridges, Catherine Decker, Hai Dang Nguyen and Kayla Schiltgen & returning company members Stacy Pottinger, Una Setia & Jen Swanson. Kinetic Evolutions has remounted an audience favorite, A Touch of Sass, with a whole new twist. You won't want to miss this powerhouse of a dance! The company will also premiere a short dance film and a new sextet where the dancers take you out on the town.
THE PHiPPS DANCE COMPANY, a youth performing group from Hudson, Wisconsin, will perform pieces including In The Upper Room and Falling Slowly. In The Upper Room, an inspirational lyrical dance, combines power and grace to lift our spirits to a new level. Falling Slowly, a modern piece performed by five dancers, is a beautiful look at falling in love.

Featuring:
Marguerite Hanbery with "Gypsy Cello Music"
Brianna Belland performing "Alone/Together"
Music By Eric Moen
The Swiss Family Gorgunson, A new age comedy group
Dominic Hanft with the short film "First of the Month"
Dance by Joanie Mix
More about the artists:
Marguerite Hanbery, Gypsy Cellist, will perform:
Sonata No. 1... (1st Movement - Allegro non troppo; 2nd movment Allegretto) Brahms borrowed and copied gypsy fiddle music that was played around the campfires. This piece really features the entire range of the cello, particularly the low notes.
Tarantella - William Henry Squire
This piece really features the entire range of the cello, particularly the low notes. Tarantella is a dance you do to get out the poison when the "spider bites you", very frenetic and fiddle-like.
Marguerite Hanbery has been playing the cello since grade school. She has been classically trained and is currently the Principal Cellist with the Minnetonka Civic Orchestra, and Associate Principal with the Linden Hills Orchestra. She plays various gigs around town, and loves being involved in the musical community. Her current teacher is Dianne Lowden, and her previous teacher was Becky Peterson. Long time soloist and over all gig playing artist. Marguerite hopes to share the "gypsy soul" of the cello with you tonight.
Brianna Belland performs "Alone/Together" *which brings up the irony of people who are left feeling isolated or people who feel that they cannot relate to anyone in a positive manner, in a population like the one that currently exists. The dance creates a ghost setting or atmosphere for a group of outcasts who feel that they’ve had to give up on the human race entirely. Similar feelings of isolation or rejection bring them together, but for each one with a different story that defines each character. The irony is visible through the 3-5 individuals forming a physical group. Tensions arise and conflicts enter into the safety area for outcasts. The story will be told through *Modern Dance*.
A recent graduate from the University of Minnesota, Brianna holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. Dancing since the age of 5, she discovered her passion for choreography through the dance composition courses offered at the U of M. For her Senior Project, Brianna wrote, directed, and choreographed a character ballet inspired by popular Tim Burton films, to Danny Elfman’s musical score, titled "The Waiting Room: A Fairytale from the Afterlife." Other choreography credits include the River Valley Theatre Company’s production of "State Fair," in Shakopee, Minnesota.
Eric Moen is a one man show, just him and his guitar. His songs come from some of his many great inspirations.
Eric Moen has been in the last year been writing songs and compiling them for his debut album "Live from Jaisle’s." He has been mostly known for his acting for most of his life, but his love of music (not music theater) has drawn him to writing and performing songs.
The Swiss Family Gorgunson, A new age comedy group combining live action and recorded sketch comedy.
This group of five young men is a new-age, Minneapolis based
sketch comedy troupe under the name of "Swiss Family Gorgunson." Combining subtlety with off-the-wall comedy, the group’s inspiration comes from beyond the mainstream for their own unique brand of sketch comedy. Dry enough to turn Seattle into Phoenix, The Gorgunsons have delivered layers of fast-paced comedy in person and on video. When asked what they thought about SFG, local critics responded "What?"
Dominic Hanft with the short film ’First of the Month’, about a young man named Tom, who comes across some awkward occurrences. It seems the combination of prescription drugs bought from a shady doctor and the sudden need for a new roommate leads to the appearance of a mute clown. Awkwardness ensues.
Dominic Hanft is a young, handsome man who has recently almost finished the filmmaking program at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. The short film ’First of the Month’ is his final project; a result of the wisdom and experience he has acquired during these past two years. He likes to think of himself as a glorious poet, his pen and paper instead replaced by a camera and 7 rolls of film. However, Dominic did not make ’First of the Month’ for pleasure, or even in an attempt for a grade. Rather, Dominic felt responsible to share this brilliant idea brewing in his mind with the general public. Thus, he forced it out, first onto paper, followed soon onto film. Perhaps someday it will make its way into movie-houses across the world, where surely, after viewing this candy for the senses, you will agree it belongs.
Joanie Mix is a performer, choreographer and teacher throughout the Twin Cities area. She has most recently performed with Carl Flink’s Black Label Movement as an apprentice in the 2006-2008 seasons. Shortly after graduating from the University of Minnesota with a BFA in dance, she apprenticed with Paula Mann and Steve Paul’s Time Track Produtions, understudied with Shapiro and Smith Dance, and worked with Twin Cities Choreographers Danielle Robinson-Prater, Carrie Lande-Homuth and Eddie Oroyan. Joanie has created choreography for La Vie Theater, Apple Valley High School, the Phipps Center for the Arts Dance Company, and has also created her own works. Her show, Making Dolls, under the company name Rainy Day Cabaret was produced as a part of the 2007 MN Fringe Festival. Now Rainy Day Cabaret is an official dance company led by Joanie Mix and Lindsay Bullock. Rainy Day Cabaret is a group of emerging artisits who hope to provide a new and continuing form of entertainment for any level of art enthusiast. Amongst these artists are Joanie Mix, Anat Shinar and Kalli
Schmuecker; all having previously held positions with Black Label Movement. Also, Lindsay Bullock, Rob Leadly, Jennifer Mack, Nick Lemere, Tristan Koepke, Katherine Lung, Renee Starr, and Lindsay Anderson will all be seen on stage with Rainy Day Cabaret. Through the use of choreogrpahy, music, video and costume design, this group generates a dark world where you are invited to come and fill your open mind.

Comedian Todd Jay

Comedian Tom Steffen
and Musician Mattson Zust
Todd Jay is a comedian who does more than tell jokes. Todd tells jokes while sharing his knack for impersonating the people he is telling jokes about. In a Prozac induced haze he worked his way into comedy, featuring at some of the top comedy clubs. He is no longer afraid to be the person who scares people in elevators. He has been heard on Minnesota Public Radio and KFAI Fresh Air radio. He appeared in sold out shows for the Minnesota Fringe Festival and Bryant Lake Bowl. Most recently he hosted the Lavender sponsored Unleash 2009 New Years Eve comedy show opening for Jason Stuart. Check out www.myspace.com/toddjcomedy for upcoming show info.
David Hanbury was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts -- MFA in Acting from the Brown/Trinity Consortium -- Rock/Pop singer and Composer for Theater -- Electric guitar virtuoso.
Mrs. Smith’s beloved cat Carlyle disappeared three years ago this July. She has been performing at open mics and cabarets since that time at the urging of her aromatherapist who suggested she find a way to release her rage. Through her performances she also hopes to raise awareness about the positive role pet can play in the lives of people incapacitated by loneliness. She is officially sponsored by Ibanez guitars.
[image3]Arturo Miles performs a jazz/Waacking routine set to early 90’s dance music.
Arturo Miles is originally from Mexico City, He has been dancing in Minneapolis since 1997. He was an original member of the Hip-hop Co-op under direction of Collen Mclellan. He has performed at the Minnesota State Fair, and participated and performed at the Walkers ’Hip-hop Heroes and Innovators’. The Hip-hop Co-op has since reinvented itself as the ’Collective’. As a member of Collective, Arturo has performed in the critically acclaimed ’Dance in the Dark’ at the Southern Theater. In addition to hip-hop dance Arturo is proficient in African, modern and House dance. He has lent his talents over the years with Deborah Jinza Thayers "Movement Architecture’, the Minnesota Orchestra, and to the
Minnesota Fringe Festival with Collective and Three Dances. He has performed with Collective at the Mall of America, Hopkin’s Center for the Arts, the Ordway, and gone on tour to Aberdeen, South Dakota, performing in area schools and teaching workshops. As a guest curator he has produced
’ The Somewhat 80’s Variety Show’,and ’Elements in Translation’ at Patrick’s Cabaret. Currently Arturo is the Program Director at Patrick’s Cabaret and has produced ’ The Somewhat Sci-Fi Variety Show’, ’The Somewhat Vaudeville Variety Show’ and continued with the ’Elements in
Translation’ series. He teaches for Collective and Zenon dance companies.
Jerome Barnes performs Thirsty Part II
Jerome Barnes, a native of Minneapolis has been dancing since he was 12 years old. He was introduced to dance at an after school program at the old Capri Theater in North Minneapolis offering dance, theater, arts, and crafts to the inner city youth. He then went on to join the Perpitch Center for the Arts Education (Arts High) in Golden Valley, this is where he really began to define who he is as a dancer. After graduating from Arts High Jerome moved to Chicago to continue his study of dance at Calumbia College
Chicago. Returning to Minneapolis he began dancing with Toni Pierce-Sands & Uri Sands TU Dance Company for 4 years. For the past few years jerome has been taking
audiences on journeys through solo work as he will share tonight.
Tom Steffen looks like a sane person, but don’t judge a book by its cover. His off-kilter outlook on life keeps audiences laughing for more. After almost two decades as a successful radio personality and total theatre geek, Tom decided to plunge into a new area of show business and began his comedy career in 2002. He has performed in numerous clubs in the upper Midwest, was a semi-finalist in Acme Comedy Company’s 2003 Funniest Person in the Twin Cities contest, and more recently, a 2007 regional contender in Comedy Central’s Open Mic Fight Contest. On stage, Tom shares the goofy adventures he finds in everyday living, from toiling away in his cubicle at his "day job," to the absurd and bizarre things to be found in the seemingly ordinary art of conversation. All the while, Tom always manages to find a fresh take on the world around us that is sure to entertain any audience.
there’s a longer bio and more info on his website:

Mattson-Kjell Zust,
singer/songwriter/recluse/patron saint of jilted trophy wives, has been called the "tammy wynette of emo" for lack of a decent genre/category. clever wit over rustic guitar and an accent that no one can quite place run rampant throughout each hymn for broken things. Mattson-Kjell is currently finishing over 12 dozen new songs in hopes to release 3-4 new albums within in the next two years. He’s also really bad at writing about himself due to his crazy-swedish humility.
