This is a range hood we custom built, along with the rest of this kitchen. It is built out of Natura...l Maple hardwoods, and formaldehyde free Maple plywood. Working with the customer, I designed the hood to stand out as an individual piece, while at the same time, compliment the look of the kitchen as a whole. I enjoyed kind of flipping the design upside down by taking the idea of corbels, and flipping them. They essentially "anchor" the front of the hood, but from above instead of below as a traditional corbel would. The hood is also useful for more than just venting the unwanted smoke and grease out of the kitchen. The three panels at the top are removable (held in place with rare earth magnets), with a large cabinet behind them for storage.
The finish, by our in house finisher, really shines here. The hood was stained first, lacquered, then painted, distressed, and lacquered again. This causes the paint to crackle, adding to the aged, distressed look.
