I’m Catholic, and I’m proud of my faith and my church. But what does it mean to be Catholic? What does it tell me about my relationship with God? The celebration of baptism includes signs that explain the richness of this sacrament and also our identity as Christian Catholics. By...

Jesus criticized the religious leaders of his time for laying burdens of guilt on people without lifting a finger to lighten them (Lk 11). It is easy to make rules for others and condemn them if they do not follow our ideas about how they should live. This costs us nothing...

Missionaries of the Sacred Heart When we feel afraid that we are not fully using our talents, we must remember that the only talent that really matters is love. No matter what our social status or individual talents, Jesus sends us opportunities for loving others.

There is a lot of interest these days in the spirituality of aging. It even sounds counter-cultural! Our spirituality helps us to focus and to discover meaning and value. I think we might mention two or three points here, among the many issues that are open to good discussion...

Missionaries of the Sacred Heart
Celebrating the Anniversary of Our Founder
On October 21, we celebrate the life and spirit of the Fr. Jules Chevalier, who founded the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart 155 years ago and whose vision continues to shape our missionary activity today. Fr. Chevalier actually inspired the foundation of three religious congr...egations which work to make God’s love known on earth (The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart; The Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and The Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart), and who, along with their lay members, are known collectively as the Chevalier Family.
Fr. Chevalier was devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and believed that God is love and is truly in our midst. He also believed that the love of the Sacred Heart offers the solution to the ills of the world and developed the Spirituality of the Heart (which focuses on building healthy relationships with God, self and others). Today, over 2,000 MSC priests and brothers in over 50 countries base their actions on that spirituality, working to respond with love to the needs of those who are poor, isolated, marginalized or without hope.
In addition to his devotion to the Sacred Heart, Fr. Chevalier also had a special devotion to Mary, and he was the first person to give her the title of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

Questions for Reflection:
The Church is essentially missionary; all are called to bring the message of the Gospel and reveal Christ’s presence to all. How might we be missionaries of God’s love in our own lives?
Fr. Chevalier believed that the Sacred Heart of Jesus could provide the remedy for the mal moderne, the ills of his time. What are some of the ills of our time and what are some of the ways they can be addressed? How are we being called to we make ourselves instruments of the love of the Sacred Heart?
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart was both the Mother of Christ and his partner in the work of redemption. How can we follow her example of saying “yes” to God’s will for us and partnering with Jesus is his work of redemption?Read More
