Buffalo's Fire My friend at the New York Times just had this Pine Ridge-gang story printed in the paper.

www.nytimes.com
Styling themselves after large urban gangs, the Indian gangs have emerged as one more destructive force in some of the country’s poorest and most neglected places.

Thankyou to all Sacred Brothers and Sisters for reaching out Heart to Heart and speaking into a multi systems and global phenomenon. When legitimate social power is overthrown, silenced and fettered from recovery ...anywhere on the planet ...these are the predictable dynamics which evolve. Gangs are not something invented on Reservations. They are symptomatic outworkings of systems of power and control manipulations and their sustained dysfunctions.

This is not a theoretical issue. This is a crisis of Spiritual warfare on Red Earth for over 500 years ...which todays gangs mirror. So many present day residents of America inadvertently develop historical amnesia and seem socially lobotomised about the need to study and learn the contradictory Histories ...the contested Histories of where they live today. It isn't Europe ...tho the hegemonic pulse of institutional and structural power is super imposed as if ...unproblematic ...when really ...it feeds much of the cultural blindness and institutional dysfunctions which parade as govt. assistance ...good intentions notwithstanding.

Reverse your analysis and ask ...what is wrong with American Society that it fails to serve the needs and interests of Red Earth peoples across the Americas?... See More

Take a socio-historical look at what the causes for these ills are ...before looking at the Rez as 'subject and locus of PROBLEM'.

Failing to consult the historical roots of the situation defaults to what many call Eurocentricsm = Monocentricsm = Every day Racism. No one wants to go there on purpose. Tho it takes a commitment to learn the Red Histories through Red Experiences and Understandings not those of the new cultures who now rule over their Ancient and Ancestral World ...by force. Whether BIA or whatever installed outsider brokers ...as fetters on Red Self Determination and Humanity. Thankyou again Sacred Brothers and Sisters and keep the dialogue open and fully informed. Sending Peace and Goodwill to our Hearts for courage and compassion to ourselves as we seek ways to join in Oneness ...sacred me is reaching out and seeking to join in Oneness, with sacred you. Kia Manuia ...Blessings BE. And yes, I do have first hand experience with these dynamics in my own backyard in the South Pacific having been a Ward of the State and institutionalized for being Indigenous. I also have Irish, Yugoslav as well as Pacific heritage so ...understand the need for European Kin to educate ourselves on the Indigenous Histories of where we live today out of fundamental sacred respect.

Buffalo's Fire The greatest concern in our lifetime should be a focus on the environment and climate change. A big thank you to the Indigenous Environmental Network who is now in Copenhagen speaking to world leaders about our globlal warming concerns. Read what the IEN is doing in Copenhagen today.

It was kind of sickening to read about how many of the world leaders arrived to the conference..gas guzzlers, limos, Mercedes, etc. I think many are put off by the "do as I say not as I do" camp. A name that comes to mind is Al Gore. He has several huge homes, travels around the world, etc. I would be more apt to listen if he moved to a small house and got rid of all of his homes, gas guzzlers, lavish vacations around the world, etc.

Buffalo's Fire I just revised some of the details on the Buffalo's Fire blog regarding Max Baucus disclosure about his girlfriend Melodee Hanes. I initially wrote about the story because of fairness issues in the US attorney and US marshall nomination process. What happened to the qualified American Indian candidates?

Buffalo's Fire I wrote a story back in March 2009 about Max Baucus and fairness in the US attorney selection process. I asked a Baucus spokesman about the senator's alleged relationship with Melodee Hanes -- a woman Baucus nominated for U.S. attorney. I also met with Hanes' ex-husband about his wife's relationship. More on the Buffalo's Fire blog.

Buffalo's Fire Wow! I am amazed at the harsh words recently unleashed between two well-known Lakota journalists. Imagine a 75-year-old man, Tim Giago, threatening to knock the other on his ass. Ironically, Giago will give the welcoming speech at a healing for the people conference in Rapid City, S.D. on Dec. 18.

Buffalo's Fire I've just posted a story I wrote on climate change for Indian Country Today. I also have some important links on indigenous views on climate change, including links to the Mystic Lake Declaration and the Indigenous Environmental Network. Note: the UN climate change talks in Copenhagen are set to begin in two weeks.
