Money's Best Places to Live 2009: Acton, MA

I am a proud Acton, MA resident of color. In response to some of the younger members of our community, I would like to say that although Acton is not the most "happening" place we are fortunate to live in such an affluent, safe and pleasant town. I am sure that the young Boston resident who was struck by a stray bullet last week while in the privacy of her own home would trade places with many of our residents in a New York minute! Acton is no Utopia, however, it is our benefit to live here and we should never lose sight of this. Also, of note, when you have books you always have “something to do.”

To be fair, Acton can in be mind-numbingly boring when you're looking for something to do on a Friday night. Conversely, the school system has plethora of fun clubs and activities which can keep kids interested and engaged through the entire week. The town is quickly being developed by contractors, so McCondos are springing up left and right, ... See Moreslowly eating away at the "New England Beauty", but then again, we always have Boxboro for that (or Littleton), so if you move here looking for that you probably won't find what you're looking for. Overall it's pretty much exactly what comes to mind when I think "suburbia", so if that's what you want, Acton is your place. If you want something more rural, head west, if you want something more hip or urbane, try Boston. If you want somewhere to raise your kids with a good education, where you can leave your door unlocked at night, where they may be bored stupid but at least they'll be learned, safe, maybe not as worldly as you might like (but then again, that usually comes at a price, so that's probably in the positive category), you can find a place in Acton.
