Evokative Films The Movie Moxie review of PARKING: "The film is beautifully shot, and the colours are gorgeous and alive brightening up the screen often at the most unlikely times. (...) Parking is a real treat, don't sit and wait in the car - get out there and catch it while you can."

No, I wasn't expecting a teen audience necessarily, although I think I would have liked to see the film when I was 16 or 17. I definitely wouldn't recommend the film to any teen below 15 though.

Evokative Films 4 stars for PARKING in NOW!
"Go ahead and add Chung Mong-Hong to the distinguished list of directors putting Taiwan on the cinematic map.
His debut feature, Parking, might feel like Crash, Short Cuts and many other films about the coincidences that link a group of disparate people, but he has a poetic eye and confident ...storytelling style, continually swerving away from pat sentimentality and melodrama."

Evokative Films "... the beauty of this well-crafted flight of dark-tinted fancy is how comfortable it makes us feel on the edge. A strange little movie with a lot of style - and a solid heart - PARKING demands some abstract manoeuvring before it lets you kiss the curb of closure. It may be tedious for some, but a great mental exercise for others."

Maybe we're all lost in a waking dream state. Then again, maybe we just love the idea of someone experiencing a succession of surreal, life- altering moments in a single soiree.

Evokative Films Tokyo Sanpo!

* FREE Priority screening on December 1st for Fantastic Fest 2010 badge holders. Once all Fantastic Fest badge holders have been seated, any remaining seats will be filled by stand-by line.
Screening times for the Dec. 4th, 5th and 6th shows to be announced later.

"In 2008, we tried desperately to bring to Fa...ntastic Fest one of my favorite films of that year, ADRIFT IN TOKYO. Hot on the festival circuit at the time, there was no print available for our fledgling festival. Now the film has finally found a home in Canada with our pals at Evokative Films. Since we're such huge fans of the film and want to support it any way we can, we've arranged to ship the Canadian print down to Austin for a weeklong engagement. We'll start it off with a free screening for 2010 Fantastic Fest badgeholders and then open it up to the general public. I think you will be as charmed by the film as I was."
Tim League, director, Fantastic Fest

Evokative Films is a Canadian distribution company, but we got a special permission from the producers to organize screenings of this beautiful film in Austin where, we've learned, people like good films.
The DVD will then be coming out on Dec. 22nd, but again, since we're a Canadian distribution company, you won't see this one at your local video store, so this is THE CHANCE to see the film that got critics and cinephile swooning over everywhere it played.
Just check out the score of ecstatic reviews the film garnered over the last months below for an idea.

*Synopsis
Leading a lazy life, Fumiya has been a university student for 8 years and owes money to loan sharks. One day, a man named Fukuhara comes to collect the loan, which Fumiya cannot pay. So Fukuhara makes a proposition: He will cancel the debt as long as Fumiya agrees to walk with him across Tokyo to the police station of Kasumigaseki, where he intends to turn himself for a crime he deeply regrets. Not having much choice, Fumiya accepts the deal. Thus begins their journey as life wanders on. Based on the original novel by Naoki Prize winner Yoshinaga Fujita comes a fascinating and humorous film capturing various encounters on a walking trip across Tokyo.

*** 1/2 (on 4)
The Globe and Mail, The National Post, The Toronto Star, Cinema Strikes Back

“...one of the five best films in the world for 2008. It’s just as good on second viewing. ...a meandering, quirky and surprisingly beautiful piece of work that perfectly balances humour and emotion.”
Todd Brown, Twichfilm

"...an absolute masterpiece. It's full of gently absurd humor and detailed character work..."
Ain't It Cool News

“... has the kind of low-key, effortless charm that most movies sweat for. ... it is a masterpiece of throwaway lines and little oddities. This is a lovely film that should not be missed.”
David Austin, Cinema Strikes Back

“... a comic stroll that is indeed aimless, but consciously, introspectively, and out-of-left-field hilariously so.”
Aaron Hillis, The Village Voice

"A flawless balance between humour and heartbreaking emotion, Adrift in Tokyo establishes Satoshi Miki as a strong, unique voice on the Japanese film landscape."
Katarina Gligorijevic, Exclaim!

"If Jim Jarmusch were Japanese, Adrift in Tokyo could be his signature piece."
Katherine Monk, CanWest Media

"I honestly can’t say I’ve ever seen a film quite like Adrift in Tokyo... An odd film, a gentle comedy... one of those rare movies where you truly have no idea what’s going to happen next."
Mark Slutsky, The Montreal Mirror

"An amusing and even poignant journey, this film is as offbeat and memorable as the leads' hairstyles. ...just the right amount of witticism and affection."
Meghan Hicks, Montreal's Hour

"One of the great pleasures of Adrift in Tokyo is the genial chemistry between the two leads. ...it's a very good thing that they didn't decide to be lazy and just take a taxi."
Jason Anderson, The Toronto Star
