Kentucky Folk Art Center LaVon Van Williams has breathed vital, new life into an important African-American wood carving tradition that has its origins in the Gullah and Geechie cultures of coastal South Carolina. Williams' work is dynamic and full of movement. At once intimate and explosive, his sculpture reflects a contemporary perspetive on the African-American experience unlike the work of many other living artists.
