My Dear Friends, On this last day of 2009 I want to wish you all a very Happy New Year and tell you how much your wonderful messages have meant to me. I appreciate your thoughtfulness more than I could ever express in words. Perhaps our paths will cross in person at some time this coming year...

Paul

Paul Just back from an extraordinary performance of the Mid-Winter Songs at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Grant Gershon, the singers, and the acoustics of WDCH delivered a really clear, more angular sound than the Salamunovich recording. I was sitting in the wrong place for the best balance between piano and chorus, but, wow.

i was so upset because i missed it. and i REALLY wanted to go to hear the difference between how the choir sang it under salamunovich and how they sang it under gershon. what do u mean by the fact that they had a more angular sound?

Well, it's hard to describe, and angular may be the wrong word, but on the recording, Salamunovich, the singers, and the recording engineer work together to give us the richest, most luscious sound. Disney Hall, on the other hand, is built for clarity and detail.

perhaps this more luscious, rich sound is due to salamunovich? knowing salamunovich and his conducting style, he placed a great deal of emphasis on tonal quality and making sure to get a rich sound out of the choir. It seems to me that mr. gershon doesnt really aim for that with the master chorale, which is a same because i LOVE the sound that ... See Morepaul was able to get out of the master chorale when he was conducting. however, that is not to say that the master chorale under gershon isnt great or anything.

Jason St Claire

Jason St Claire Hello fellow Morten Lauridsen friends. Just an FYI for those in the Omaha area (and those who want to travel) the UNO Chamber Choir will be performing all four of the Nocturnes at their concert this Sunday at Dundee Pres. Church, 5312 Underwood Ave., in Omaha at 3:00 PM. Some may know that the fourth Nocturne, "Voici l...e Soir," was a late addition to the Nocturnes, and is not avaiable on any current recording. Admission is a free will offering at the door, come if you can!
