In a large slice of the world, girls are uneducated and women marginalized, and it's not an accident that those same countries are disproportionately mired in poverty and torn apart by fundamentalism and chaos. There's a growing recognition among everyone from the World Bank to the U.S. military's Joint Chiefs of Staff to aid organizations like CARE that focusing on women and girls is the most effective way to fight global poverty and extremism. That's why foreign aid is increasingly directed to women. The world is awakening to a powerful truth: Women and girls aren't the problem; they're the solution.

In 2008, ExxonMobil launched a $1.5 million project with Vital Voices to empower women in Africa to become leaders and advocates. Research demonstrates that investing in the education, training and leadership of women and girls delivers high returns for economic and social development, including: lower infant and child mortality rates; disease prevention; women empowerment; and, higher income and productivity rates.

Tupperware U.S. is the national sponsor of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America's SMART Girls program. SMART Girls has programming directed for girls ages 8-12 and 13-17, both critical periods for girls when they experience profound physical and emotional changes, often accompanied by a drop in self-esteem and self-confidence. The program reached thousands of young girls helping to stem the tide of high school dropouts, teen pregnancy, and the rising rates of alcohol, cigarette, and drug abuse.
