Indiana Writing Project Dear Colleague,

IPFW’s Department of English and Linguistics and the School of Education are pleased to announce the Appleseed Writing Project’s 3nd Annual Conference to be held on the IPFW campus on Saturday, November 8, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This year’s theme—empowering students and teachers through writing...—explores how to create space for the development of voice and consciousness as members of a school community and diverse society.

Our conference keynote speaker is Linda Christensen, author of Reading, Writing, and Rising Up: Teaching about Social Justice and the Power of the Written Word. In her keynote session, Empowering Writers: Inviting Student Lives into the Classroom, she will draw on her 30 years as an inner city classroom teacher in Portland, Oregon, to discuss strategies for developing strong student writers. Using stories and examples from her classroom work, Christensen will explore how she has attempted to create literate, engaging classrooms by grounding the curriculum in the language and lives of students. She will provide examples that demonstrate how to value the cultures of marginalized groups while giving them access to the language and tools of power.
The conference will also feature three area author/poets who will share their experiences with literacy and empowerment: IPFW’s Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing Curtis Crisler (author of Tough Boy Sonatas and several published poems); Helen Frost, poet, playwright and author of several children's books (including Keesha’s House, Spinning through the Universe and most recently, The Braid); and Cynthia Furlong Reynolds, author of a series of adult histories and a dozen picture books, including Across the Reach and H is for Hoosier (winner of the 2004-2005 Young Hoosier Book Award).
The Appleseed Writing Project will offer concurrent sessions for elementary/primary through college/university levels in the following proposed strands: Writing in the Content Area, Multilingual, Multicultural, Special Needs, and Author.

All questions about the conference should be directed to Co-site Directors Karol Dehr at (260) 481-6074 or dehr@ipfw.edu or Dr. Glenda Moss at (260) 481-6440 or mossg@ipfw.edu.

Indiana Writing Project I found a book you all might like (those of you who worship Harry Potter). It is called If Harry Potter Ran General Electric: Leadership Wisdom from the World of Wizards. It is by Tom Morris and he also wrote the book If Aristotle Ran General Motors (which I have not read, but I think I need to).

Anyway, thought you all... might like to check it out:http://www.amazon.com/Harry-Potter-Ran-General-Electric/dp/0385517548/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1218130025&sr=8-1
