NAME THE MTNZ HISTORY BOOK COMPETITION – WINNER WILL RECEIVE A FREE REGISTRATION FOR CONFERENCE - Allan Nagy and I are currently in the process of putting this together and it will be available for sale at conference and also available for those not attending. The final cost is TBC but it will be totally affordable for everyone. I am having a great time going through all the old Spotlights, some fabulous photos of days and shows gone by. However, we need a name for the “book”. There has been a few suggestions, however, the Executive would like to run a competition – so get your marketing teams to come up with a name – eg. Life is a cabaret …. 50 Years of Musical Theatre NZ; No Business Like 50 Years of Show Business; and I was looking at Stagecraft’s history and they called theirs’ “Beginners Please” so you get the drift. We would love your ideas and suggestions and the winning entry will receive a FREE conference registration for Auckland. So please put your thinking cap on and email through your ideas to kate@musical.org.nz to be received no later than 1 December.

ABOUT THE SHOW
RENT is a revolutionary modern rock opera, updating Puccini's classic
"La Boheme", and is widely considered the greatest rock musical of
modern times. Set in the late 1980's in New York City's Bohemian East
Village, this stirring musical tells the story of a group of
impoverished young artists, writers and musicians struggling to live
and pay their rent. "Measuring their lives in love," these starving
artists strive for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles
of poverty, illness and loss; all while celebrating their creative
spirit, choosing to live life as if there is No Day But Today!
Described by Rolling Stone magazine as "a raw and riveting milestone in
musical theatre", RENT is Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer and Tony Award
winning musical, one of the longest running shows on Broadway.

Musical Theatre NZ Papakura Theatre Company are opening a Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum 14 November. Book at Papakura Paper Power 09-298-5280. Good luck to the cast, crew and production team for a fantastic season. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and ...a book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart.Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251–183 BC), specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus and Mostellaria, it tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, the slamming of doors, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another), and satirical comments on social class. The musical's original 1962 Broadway run won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Book. A Funny Thing has enjoyed several Broadway and West End revivals and was made into a successful film.
