Nawal originally comes from the Comoros Islands, also known as the “Perfume Islands” or “Islands of the Moon,” located in the Indian Ocean off the... eastern coast of Africa. Born into a family with many musicians, Nawal bathed in both popular and spiritual music from a young age, in her native islands and also in her new home in France.

Between traditional and contemporary, Nawal’s music weaves a rich dialog of cultures, a reflection of the diverse character of life in her native islands. Indo-Arabian-Persian music meets Bantu polyphonies, the syncopated rhythms and Sufi trance of the Indian Ocean. Nawal sings in Comoran, Arabic, French and English. An acoustic roots-based fusion, her music is rhythmically compelling and beautifully lyrical. Known as the “Voice of Comoros,” Nawal is also the first Comoran woman singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist to give performances in public.

"A franchi la ligne"

Dans un espace dépouillé où l'éclairage est décor, se construiront les différents paysages de cette parole. L'enfant et ses deuils, l'homme et ses exils, la femme co...nquise et déjà perdue.
Dans ce tissage poétique des oeuvres de Léon-Gontran Damas une comédienne, incarne une poésie moderne et humaine. La simplicité de l'écriture, la musicalité des vers et la radicalité des propos ouvrent une perspective qui rencontre et prolonge le courant de la Négritude fondé avec Césaire et Senghor.
Humour, tendresse, dérision et révolte invitent à franchir la ligne et aller à la rencontre d'un homme qui a su s'engager pour faire de son désespoir un souffle de vie, un germe de liberté. La voix de Damas résonne encore dans notre vie..

En 2008, on commémore le trentième anniversaire de la mort de Léon-Gontran Damas.
Il est né le 28 mars 1912 à Cayenne, en Guyane. Il étudie d'abord à Fort-de-France, où il a comme condisiciple Aimé Césaire et à partir de 1928, en France, à Meaux. Il se fixe en 1929 à Paris. C'est là qu'il rencontre Léopold Sédar Senghor en 1930, et retrouve Aimé Césaire en 1932. Ensemble, ils vont collaborer à la revue L'Etudiant noir qui paraît en 1935 et marque les débuts du courant de la "Négritude".
Il publie Pigments en 1937, Retour de Guyane en 1938, Veillées Noires en 1943, Graffiti en 1953, Black-Label en 1956, Névralgie en 1966.
Il meurt le 22 janvier 1978 à Washington.

Nawal, originaire de l'archipel des Comores, est auteur-compositeur-interprète. Dès son enfance, elle a baigné dans un monde musical à la fois pop et religieux. La musique de Nawal, résolument acoustique, tisse un harmonieux dialogue entre les cultures indo-arabo-persanes, les polyphonies bantous, les chants soufis, les rythmes syncopés de l'océan Indien et un zest de swing. Au fil du temps, sa musique s'est dépouillée pour aller à l'essentiel.
