NCFR Former NCFR President and U of MN professor Bill Doherty has spearheaded a community/citizen effort that has recently gained new national attention as it has been added to the MDLinx system. Say Doherty, “Parent education needs a wider lens for viewing parents not only as child rearers but also as citizens concerned with public issues affecting all of our children. In this project we learned that parents care deeply about what's going on in their communities and the wide culture, that they enjoy deliberating on these issues as part of regular parenting classes, and that they are willing to take personal and collective action on public pressure points in their lives.” Check out this project, click on "publications."

The Citizen Professional Center will be a national leader in preparing professionals for effective democratic engagement with communities and in generating community-based research that advances knowledge and solves local problems.

Well, maybe he didn’t have co-parents in mind when he said this, but this is an apt warning for parents who sip the bitter brew.

NCFR Attention members and friends of NCFR: Today (Tues) the community surrounding the office building that is home to NCFR Central is without power. Our servers and phones are, therefore, down and we cannot access our office. Thank you for your patience as the local electric utility is working on the problem that began at 1:30 am this morning. Thanks for your support, Ruth. You nailed me. I do and always will feel guilty about it. I did say something like, "My! Look at the time!". Then I said we didn't know how to play Whist (true). They said, "Oh, we'll teach you!" Nobody picked up on the hints. My poor husband is an extreme introvert and I thought he was about to die. Sigh.

Thanks for posting! N

Parents of high school graduates who will be college freshmen in the fall may be already worrying how they can help prepare their student, especially since parenting a college student is not what it used to be.

BALTIMORE - In times of economic crisis, Americans turn to their families for support. If the Great Depression is any guide, we may see a drop in our sky-high divorce rate. But this won't necessarily represent an increase in happy marriages, nor is the tr
