Please join NDN on the evening of Wednesday, October 28 for an important discussion on the future of America’s military involvement in Afghanistan. Leading the conversation will be two influential and knowledgeable guests: Congressman Adam Smith, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Unconventional Threats and... Capabilities of the House Armed Services Committee, and journalist Peter Bergen, the Co-Director of the New America Foundation’s Counterterrorism Strategy Initiative.
Congressman Smith will speak about his recent official trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Congressional outlook on the report on the war prepared by General Stanley McChrystal, and the Obama Administration's strategy. Bergen, who has visited Afghanistan frequently since 1993, will discuss the definition and possibility of American success in Afghanistan.
A brief reception including drinks and light hors d'oeuvre will begin at 6:30, with the discussion beginning at 7:00pm. If you are unable to attend, a live webcast will begin at 7:00pm as well.

About the Film
9500 Liberty is a compelling new documentary about a suburban community's struggle to manage their changing population in a climate of fear and racial tension exploited by national groups and ambitious local politicians. The film documents how residents and advocacy groups on both sides used new media, technology and social networking to organize for the future of their community online, on the streets and at the center of local politics. 9500 Liberty provides a front-row seat to this battle, one that we will likely see repeated in the months to come as the immigration reform debate returns to the forefront of the national discourse.

Clean vehicles have the potential to provide energy security, help solve climate change and create new jobs and wealth. But major questions remain: How will the industry re-emerge? Where will it thrive? What technologies and companies will come out on top? The answers to these questions will impact not only America’s f...uture but the world’s.
To understand the future of clean transportation, NDN will convene a panel of experts for a discussion on clean vehicles and the future of the auto industry. Joining us will be Dave McCurdy, former Congressman and President and CEO of the Auto Alliance, Kim Hill of the Center for Automotive Research, who has recently completed a study on jobs created by fleet conversion, and Mike Granoff, Head of Oil Independence Policies for Better Place, the transformative, Palo Alto-based electric car infrastructure company. For more on the speakers, visit our website.
Our panel of experts will discuss new technologies on the horizon, how clean vehicles will create jobs and transform the economy, the connection between electric cars, renewable energy and the electricity network and how clean vehicles can provide energy security and address climate change.

On August 27th at 12:15 pm, you're invited to have lunch at NDN while Simon Rosenberg presents his famous and enormously worthwhile presentation "The Dawn of a New Politics." If you plan to join us at NDN, please RSVP by clicking here: https://services.myngp.com/NGPOnlineServ ices/Event.aspx?Y=FrZ0S4jyDpX8EHogjVWC7f urcC...duLI0OFxz9iQNAKJvSlMQzuw4a0Q%3d%3d. If you can't have lunch at NDN, have lunch with NDN by tuning in at 12:15 for our live webcast (http://ndn.org/livecast).
Once a month over lunch you can see Simon's presentation "The Dawn of a New Politics," either in person at NDN or live online. This engaging presentation makes a big argument about how politics is changing in America today, and offers ideas and strategies for how progressives can replicate our 20th century success in this new and dynamic century. Simon constantly updates his slides to include the latest in media, demography and politics.
You can preview some of Simon's arguments in the "Dawn of a New Politics" in a few of his recent essays. In his article "The 50 Year Strategy," (http://ndn.org/sites/default/files/paper /The_50-Year_Strategy.pdf) published in Mother Jones Magazine just before the 2008 Election, Simon encourages progressives to think about not only a 50-state strategy to win in 2008, but also to think about a 50-year strategy to build a lasting electoral majority. He argues that only a strong and long-term governing coalition can turn our progressive vision for the future into a reality. Simon writes,
"This is not any odd moment in history. It has the potential to definitively mark the end of the conservative period and the start of a progressive one. It's not inevitable. It will take real leadership on many fronts for many years to come. But for the first time in a very long while, it's truly possible."
A second important background piece is Simon's essay "On Obama, Race and the End of the Southern Strategy," (http://ndn.org/node/1676) in which he explains how progressives can build a majority coalition in the 21st Century.
Finally, the most recent addition to Simon's presentation is an extension of his primary argument about how new tools and demographics are informing a new kind of domestic politics. Drawing inspiration from Fareed Zakaria's notion of "the rise of the rest," Simon has incorporated new slides to show that the international preponderance of technology and mobile devices, combined with the shifting demographics and world power structures are creating a new global politics. Simon shares a few of his ideas about this in relation to the Iranian Election in his essay, "Obama: No Realist He," (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/simon-rose nberg/obama-no-realist-he_b_216199.html) which debuted on Huffington Post a few weeks ago.
Simon has delivered his presentation "Dawn of a New Politics" all across the country over the past several years: At the DNC in Denver, twice for the House Democratic Caucus, on the Google campus, and recently before members and staff of the DSCC and DAGA, among many other gatherings.Read More

NDN and the New Politics Institute are excited to announce a cutting-edge event – an examination of how Twitter and the new media landscape are drastically changing government and journalism both in the United States and around the world, creating the possibility of a more bottom-up politics.
Joining us to discuss these... seismic shifts will be Eric Jaye and Theo Yedinsky of Storefront Political Media and Nico Pitney of the Huffington Post. Jaye and Yedinsky are the new media masterminds behind Gavin Newsom’s pioneering gubernatorial campaign. Using Twitter as never before, they have helped Gavin accrue more than 700,000 followers, up from 250,000 just ten weeks ago. This explosive growth is raising questions about whether the model pioneered by Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election has already become obsolete.
Twitter is also having a profound impact on politics around the world. Staying connected through Twitter and other new media, Nico Pitney has been providing real-time coverage of what has been happening inside Iran, and becoming himself a witness to the historic uprising there. His work, which quickly became the “blog of record” on Iran and has been closely followed by millions around the world, is an inspiring example of the paradigm shift that is now occurring in journalism. In a recent press conference, President Obama answered a question from Nico, a question he passed along from a reader inside Iran. The State Department even asked Twitter to postpone their scheduled maintenance to allow the Iranians to keep speaking to the world.
We hope you will be able to join us next Wednesday, July 15, at 12 p.m. Lunch will be served. Space is limited, so please click here to RSVP: https://services.myngp.com/NGPOnlineServ ices/Event.aspx?Y=FrZ0S4jyDpWaNY13E3fcTy neU2wz7H0nnN8Ljw7jIB6a1lyPU17LFw%3d%3d
