NERFA ALL NERFA DEADLINES EXTENDED

This note is being cross-posted to those who have attended NERFA in the past, those on the Folk Alliance Listserv, the NERFA Listserv as well as several other Listserv/discussion groups serving the folk community.

The formal showcase judges have completed their task and will be announcing t...he results within the next few days. However, all other deadline have been extended to midnight September 12th. This includes the Tri-centric and family showcase applications, any workshop proposals and of course, the early bird registration rate.

The need to extend these deadlines has been brought about by various problems with our website which are yet to be corrected. Since our office will not officially be opening until the day after Labor Day (9/8/09) those of you without easy computer access found it difficult to communicate the problems you were having and to ask questions. In all fairness we want to give these folks the opportunity to apply for a showcase and to register at the early bird rate. Someone will actually be answering or closely monitoring the NERFA phone 215-546-7766 during normal business hours this entire week. Next year the NERFA office will officially open on September 1st to avoid this problem.

ALL AUGUST 31ST DEADLINES HAVE BEEN EXTENDED TO SEPTEMBER 12TH

If you have read this far and have absolutely no idea what I am talking about - I suggest you read a bit further. NERFA (The NorthEast Regional Folk Alliance) is a conference held each year in mid-November for those who are professionally involved in the business of Folk Music and for those who wish they were. This includes Performing Artists, Agents, Managers, Presenters, Record Labels, Media, Art Administrators, Festival Organizers, Folk Societies, Folklorists, DJ’s, etc.

Some of the things happening at this multifaceted conference include an exhibit hall, workshops on everything from advancing your career to getting better publicity for your venue to learning voice exercises or learning how to apply for a grant or audience development for your folk club or learning the ins and outs of website development, Facebook, etc. There is also showcasing throughout the resort. About 30% of those registered for this conference are presenters who do the booking for various venues throughout the Northeast or are Folk DJ’s who present this music to the public. To be selected for a NERFA showcase is truly an honor. Many presenters tell us this is where they book almost their entire Festival or concert series. We have heard from performers who consider this the best place to showcase because you have a captive audience. This is because NERFA is held at a resort where everyone eats together as a community and almost all attend the showcases as a community. This is unlike many similar conferences where meals are not included and one may, or may not make it back in time for the showcases when they go out to eat. Also, remember all NERFA juried showcases are completed protected. NOTHING – ABSOLUTELY NOTHING – may take place at the same time. The Private and Guerilla showcases are a bit different. These showcases may happen any time of the day or night (other than during Formal and Tricentric showcases) and there may be several dozen happening at once.

FAMILY / CHILDREN’S SHOWCASE
By popular request, we are repeating the family entertainment track added to the NERFA programming. Starting at 10:30 Friday morning, we will have a family music showcase followed by some specific workshops. This programming is geared towards presenters considering adding family programming to their festival or music series and for performers considering expanding their repertoire. Many venues already include family music in their programming. This is the perfect opportunity for presenters and performers alike to explore this possibility and to preview great family music. If you wish to appear in this very special showcase, you can get an application on our website www.nerfa.org Remember the deadline has been extended to September 12th.

TRI-CENTRIC SHOWCASES
You must either have your Tri-centric application postmarked by midnight tonight (8/31/09) – or call or write the office for instructions on submitted your application and three songs on-line. (215-546-7766 or nerfa@comcast.net) We are in the process of setting up this new system but not in time for this letter to go out. Any submissions postmarked after August 31 will not be accepted. In order to apply at this late date, you must follow the instructions we will have for you in the next day or two.

We also wanted to remind you why being selected for a NERFA Formal or TriCentric showcase is truly an honor. Many presenters tell us this is where they book almost their entire Festival or concert series. We have heard from performers who consider this the best place to showcase because you have a captive audience. This is because NERFA is held at a resort where everyone eats together as a community and almost all attend the showcase as a community. This is unlike similar conferences where meals are not included and one may, or may not make it back in time for the showcases when they go out to eat. Also, remember all NERFA juried showcases (both Formal and TriCentric) are completely protected. NOTHING – ABSOLUTELY NOTHING – may take place at the same time. There is only ONE Formal showcase happening at their scheduled time – and only Three TriCentrics happening right next to each other at the same time. Now the Private and Guerilla showcases – that is a bit different. These showcases may happen any time of the day or night (other than during Formal and Tricentric showcases) and there may be several dozen happening at once.

We will be returning this year to our new home – The Hudson Valley Resort and conference center. Last year we heard only rave reviews from you asking us to work out whatever small differences there were and make sure we return here. The HVR has recently changed owners. The new owners have invested multiple millions in renovating, upgrading and creating a very comfortable and beautiful resort and spa. The conference rooms are much better than those we used at Kutshers. Most importantly, the sleeping rooms are newly renovated and clean!! The Hudson Valley Resort is another one of the grand hotels in the Catskills and shares many of the positive aspects of Kutshers, such as expansive lobbies with baby grand piano and lots of nooks and crannies for great jamming spaces. However, we want to make it clear for those of you who need to know this - IT IS NOT A KOSHER KITCHEN ! If you want to check out this place, look at their website: www.HudsonValleyResort.com

Another thing NERFA is well known for is our excellent selection of workshops and panelists. If you have an idea for a workshop, we would love to hear from you. Unfortunately, this is one of the many problems we are having with our website: you fill out the workshop proposal form and hit submit – only it never reaches our office. So please, write a detailed description of your workshop proposal – including what audience you think it would serve and any suggestions you have for the moderator and panelists – and e-mail it to nerfa@comcast.net. We apologize for this inconvenience.

NERFA offers a Presenter’s Incentive to anyone who books a folk venue. You are eligible for this ONLY if booking your venue is your main purpose in attending the conference. Sorry, we cannot make this available to you if you are also coming as a performer with intentions of showcasing. This presenters incentive is also available for Folk DJ’s.

If you are coming to NERFA, we encourage you to think about coming on Thursday. This is when the special Folk DJ showcase happens; it starts after dinner Thursday evening. Also, the programming begins Friday morning and some of the very best workshops are scheduled then – including our very special newly added Children/Family programming.

If you are mailing anything to the NERFA office from this point forward, please remember to use this address. If you send anything to the Lake Harmony address no one is there.
