This page was created as tribute to Kenya's very 2nd Olympic medalist who helped usher in Kenya's ongoing distance dynasty 1970s. Kipchoge "Kip" Keino is one of middle distance running's greats born on January 17th 1940 in Kipsamo, Kenya, as a member of the Nandi tribe.... A two-time Olympic gold medal winner, the Kenyan was the pioneer of altitude training to improve the performance of athletes. His Olympic career began in Tokyo at the 1964 Games where he placed fifth in the 5,000 metres. Four years later he competed in Mexico, despite suffering from a gallbladder infection in the lead-up to the Games. He took part in the 10,000 metres and was leading with two laps to go before collapsing as a result of the infection. Keino showed true grit to lift himself from the track and complete the race. A few days later he won his first Olympic medal, a silver in the 5,000m. Then came his most famous triumph. Keino was due to run the 1,500m but on the way to the stadium his taxi was stuck in traffic. Keino was forced to jog about a mile to the stadium before beating American Jim Ryun into second place in the race. Four years later Keino repeated his gold & silver haul, this time taking gold in the 3,000m steeplechase and silver in the 1,500m. Keino retired from international running in 1973. He then opened, along with his wife, an orphanage in his home country. With the help of his wife Phyllis, they run a school - Kip Keino School Primary school which they started with the help of many great friends. A Kip Keino Secondary School is under construction & almost done.
