I would start with the Davidson County Farmers Co-op on Dickerson Rd. The breed depends on preference, white eggs or brown eggs. Rhode Island Reds are a common breed as are Dominikers and Minorcas. Back in the day when I lived on a farm and had chickens, I preferred the Minorcas. They are mostly black in collor and lay brown eggs.
You may also ... See Morewant to check with the country extension agent. They will know about 4-H clubs that raise chickens for projects and then sell the chickens once the project goal has been met. I bought some from a high school student in Williamson County several years ago.

Backyard chickens -- they're suddenly everywhere. We'll get inside the new chickencoop with The New Yorker's Susan Orlean, and more.

Daniel Burt Hey everyone, my favorite chicken website, www.backyardchickens.com, needs your vote! They are in a contest to receive a "business pitch" that would further public education about backyard chickens. Thanks!

Nashville Urban Chickens How great, Councilman Charlie Tygard at right before then end of the first minute with a fresh egg in his hand! CM Tygard was absent at the last council meeting, therefore did not vote on the Holleman Bill. We hope he will agree that responsible keeping of urban chickens is appropriate for families across Nashville, no...t just those in Bellevue! As the anti -chicken Burch bill stands you need 5 acres for even 2 hens!

Nashville Urban Chickens Please contact your council person before Tuesday to let them know you are against the Burch Bill (BL2009-499) that is very restrictive of chicken ownership in Nashville. Only people with 5 acres are more are allowed to have chickens? That is very unfair to the rest of us. CM Burch should come together to compromise on... CM Holleman's bill, just like he stated on record he would do at the Planning Commission meeting.

Hi Denise, Great point. We definitely do not want this to come to a shouting match. I think the problem is that for the most part, some of the folks on council here in Nashville are using chickens as part of their scapegoat against new residents in their communities because they do not like the way their neighborhood is turning. Instead of having a... See More civil dialogue about it and compromising as CM Burch agreed to at the televised Planning Commission meeting, they turned around and wouldn't even pass CM Holleman's Bill so it could be debated at 3rd reading.

There are so many things we could do to make sure neighbors and chicken owners alike have a comprehensive understanding of proper chicken stewardship. Already great local non-profits have agreed to give courses. Unfortunately, for neighborhoods that have an existing codes/enforcement problem (with our without chickens), the problem will likely remain, this bill will just keep laying hens out of the backyards of responsible citizens.

Even tho I am pro chicken I do have concerns with urban chickens.. One thing is "cock fighting" its alive and well here in TN. So I have concerns for those that would abuse this law if it was every passed ( the pro chicken one ) .
And I do have concerns if Code could handle this extra job. Because you know folks will not be resp. chicken owners..... See Moreor they will be raising them.. or someone will have a rooster and so and so on.. So I can understand the anti chicken side in a way..
I'm not sure who should the control of chicken patrol would come under if not Codes? Animal Control? Or ?

Not only will you have a self sustained miniature-farm that produces fresh organic eggs everyday, recycles your food scraps and provides high quality fertilizer, but you'll be proud to know that you made something with your own two hands.

Hondo This still has to be voted on by Metro Council.... Everyone needs to contact their council men/women and tell them to vote YES!
